The pillar stands on a tumulus just outside an Iron Age hillfort on the downs to the south of Andover. The base of the trig is exposed by a couple of inches. It has FB S1695 and its spider is plugged by a metal cap with shallow lettering. A “storytrail” roundel is stuck on the side. The trig looks over a wide expanse of lower farmland to the north with low wooded hills on the horizon. A spur of the fort could be seen to the east and the low downs that flank the Test Valley. In the south a patchwork of fields could be seen stretching into the distance with a long low wooded ridge on the horizon. The hillfort has impressive ramparts and at the time of my visit was occupied by several ponies and numerous butterflies. The trig sits inside the boundaries of the Scheduled Monument and is also within the Danebury Hill SSSI.
