Walked around from Snailsden via the fences, the main ridge having a clear path on the N side which with the recent sunny weather was pretty dry and bouncy underfoot. Would not be so pleasant crossing the peat after a very wet spell. The whitewashed trig is on the S side of the fence at a corner with a great view down Longdendale. The corner fence post has broken at the foot allowing the fence to be easily crossed. KF

Found during a moorland run, along with the trig point at Snailsden. Both the spider and bracket are in good condition - although, unsurprisingly, the pillar is slightly weather-worn.

It seems that I only visit this area in poor visibility. This time it was really foggy. I visited three Peak District Ethels on a nine mile circular hike starting from the car park opposite the Holme Moss Transmitter. Britland Edge, Dead Edge End and Snailsden Pike.

Came by way of Snailsden, Ramsden Clough rim, with an out and back to Britland Edge Hill. Dry underfoot so a good time to walk this as paths can be very squelchy. Returned via Lady Cross and Woodland Clough.

One of two trigs bagged on a ten mile hike from Dunford Bridge. The weather was atrocious - sideways rain and low visibility. The hike did have some good views but it was miles of Grouse moors all looking much the same closer to the pillar. It was generally in good condition but the foundations were partly exposed and the centre cap for the spider had been replaced.

A poignant spot to spend 2 minutes remembrance. Its not entirely pathless up there, The walk over from the car park on the Holme Moss road at SE 09900 02180 is OK. Through stile and up the pathless steep slope onto Britland Edge Hill then just follow the fence line. Its wet underfoot (very in places) at this time of year but mostly not too tussocky and there is a faint path most of the way.

I thought this was going to be a new pillar, but I have visited several times on the Dark Peak 4 County Tops route. Thus I knew a nice circular route on lesser trodden paths. Fantastic views in all directions with mean, moody skies holding lots of snow. Some people come up roses when sh*t is thrown at them. Funeral parlours and associated industries have never been busier and doing a superb job in these testing times. This one is most certainly for you.

walked across the valley from Snailsden pillar, crossing over the source of the River Don. Very exposed and windy, on county boundary. Amazing views taking in Bleaklow, Holme Moss, Huddersfield, Emley Moor. Good condition, plug filled in, all holes open.

Parked at Winscar Reservoir at 07:00 and then headed North then left turn ignoring all signposts and headed first to Snailsden trig then kept walking west until we reached the fence then turned left again to eventually reach Dead Edge End trig at 08:38 then from there we followed the fence east until it terminated then we headed north east following the line of the shooting bunkers and eventually walked back to the southern shores of Winscar Reservoir then back to the car a total of seven miles.

Parking on the road to the N in sort of lay-by, from there over Cook's Study Hill. and on the the Pillar at Snailsden, there is no path to speak of once you're over Cook's Study Hill. Pillar has had an attempt on the spider, other than that good. From here over to Dead Edge End, where there is no path! so tough going.Pillar is in good condition very isolated area, nice views, back via boundary fence and back over Cook's Study Hill

Last trig of the year! Under blue skies with wind stiffening and grey smothering out the year. Great spot can't believe I've not done it before. Rough scramble from Woodhead via rail sighting pillar (which we walked to mistakenly thinking it was the trig, oh for a gps!). Walk from South Yorkshire to Derbyshire.

Looking out to the South/West Yorkshire borders, next stop Longleys in Holmfirth - the yoghurt farm is just over the hill!

Second trig with mate, Tracker Dog. Took boggyish walk S/SW from Snailsden round to the trig following boundary fence for most of way, is this for when Derbyshire declares independence? Missed out apparent 'source' of the River Don, left it for another day. Marvelous views all round, could see N Wales hills in W, N York Moors, and N Pennines. Stopped for sarnies here. On to last trig, South Nab.

Walked across from Snailsden via Withens edge, not to boggy surprisingly. Followed the boundary fence up to the pillar. Good all round views apart from the windfarm to the East. Followed the route out of Keith Steven's book and was accompanied by Wilf aka the CYCLIST. Parked on the Dunford Bridge road off the A628 in cloudy conditions. These lifted within minutes and visibility improved markedly. The directions were very clear and the pillar was reached within forty minutes. Now off to Snailsden and a new one for the Cyclist. The views were very good on a sunny day.

Descended from South Nab to the A628 at SE155001. Crossed to the moorland track on the opposite side of the road and followed it past the remains of Lady Cross (a stump in a moat of frozen water). Ground was rather boggy towards the bottom just before picking up the Trans Pennine Trail. Crossed Salter's Brook by means of a charming packhorse bridge to again cross the A628. Continued westwards along the Longdendale Trail before taking a track up the hill at SK120999 to an abandoned quarry whilst a helicopter was busy ferrying material along the valley. Entered the quarry by climbing a metal gate and made my way through the abandoned workings whereupon the pillar soon came into view across the moor. Made straight for the pillar on a bearing of 007. Ground was reasonably firm thanks to a hard frost overnight but every so often one of my feet would disappear into wet bog. Location even more isolated than South Nab but the views down Longdendale were excellent. Pillar in good condition with a lovely coat of white paint.

I took a route north over the Woodhead Tunnels, up Upper Head Dike. The snow in places was still really deep, and it hid some quite dangerous terrain. The view was ok, but i wouldn't say it deserved the effort.

Thought I’ll just nip up to Dead End Edge on the way back from a three trigpoint walk from Crowden. Parked in the nearest lay-by on the A628 and headed north. Much more difficult and further than I expected but dry under foot.

Interesting pre-(r)amble along the Trans Pennine Trail crossing Salters Brook Moor then a wonderful, flat, travers as the A628 disappears from sight (and sound!) down Longdendale. Realise I don't usually get the chance to appreciate Birchen Bank Wood opposite. The pillar itself? Well I missed it at first by heading up Round Hill, which lead me to resort to map (!) and compass (!!!). None of this GPS malarky for. The tunnel air shafts just call out for ... triangulation! Bliss.

Parked car at Salters Brook Bridge Grid ref SE 13649 00156. Hard walking over open moor land via air shaft of woodhead tunnel. wet and boggy in places but good views at trig.

Wet and very windy. Approach from Ramsden Reservoir (drained at the moment) was a boggy slog. Then over to Snailsden - more bog.

Dead Edge Sporting a thick coat of paint - who paints these things?

vgc, old brown resin plug. By fence corner, tussocky moorland summit, unexciting view. Track from E marked 'No Access' back in 2002 - no probs post CRoW Act. Old building at SE135001, path heads W past deep rushes, then up onto plateau - worth following.

On bleak moor, by a county boundary fence. Good condition, stone plug. Open Access land Public. Did it with Snailsden and South Nab, a real slog, but a superb day. Goodness knows what the place is like when it's REALLY wet!

Approched from Winscar Reservoir, up Dearden Clough and then due West following the county boundary fence along the ridge. This makes for ease of navigation in bad weather but is not otherwise recommended except to masochists!

Plastic plug; 3 sighting holes open. Approached from Holme Moss by following the fence which marks the county boundary; a bit wet in places but straightforward. Sombre moorland. Views of the northern edge of the Peak District, Longdendale, Holme Moss, Huddersfield and Royd Moor wind farm.

pleasant moorld summit, wide view. Made a point of checking, there's nothing significantly higher than the FB so it's not a Dewey 500er.
