Parked on roadside, river crossing easy due to lack of rain. Nice path through woods, but once into open hillside the path was quite overgrown. Lucky we knew the way anyway. Remains of a Vanessa trig make the cairn. Bolt is intact underneath. Lovely views!

Parked opposite in lay by on Glen Lonan Road and made a straight route up. Had to take my shoes off to cross a small stream. Hard going on the way up. There is a forestry track half way up and from there it is steep. The remains of the trig are now a cairn marker. 360° views of Ben Cruachan, Taynuilt, Loch Etive, Dunbeg, Connel, Ardmucknish Bay, Lismore & Loch Nell. We were circled by white tailed eagles near the summit.

Parked in the grassy car park beside a bridge on the Glen Lonan road, about 500 metres East of the farmhouse Clachandubh. Had to cross a small stream and a boggy field before starting the climb. There's not really an obvious path so just headed towards the summit through woodland, following a forestry track for a while until it went in the wrong direction. The climb becomes easier and more grassy near the top, but there is one false summit to frustrate you. Apparently the pillar was obliterated by a lightning strike, although the remnants have now been formed into a summit cairn. The name Deadh Choimhead roughly translates as 'Good View' which you'll discover is very apt when you get to the top.

Cairn at hill summit is largely made up of concrete chunks of the trig, all placed on the trig base which has the upper bolt extant and the 4 reinforcing rods protruding some 18" (one still encased in concrete) and which holds the cairn together. I dismantled it all to photograph the bolt, rebuilding after. Pleasant walk up, parking at start of a mapped track (NM 9462 2748). A good (unmapped) logging road was picked up at NM 9455 2798 and followed round the hill to NM 9502 2826, whence it was steep and rough to the top.

Made my approach from the Glen Lonan road. Eventually won my battle through the thick plantation and made it out onto the open hillside. Harvested handfuls of juicy bilberries before topping out to find the thunderbolt stricken ex-Vanessa pillar. Didn’t fancy returning the same way, so spied out the Connel Bridge and tramped down in that direction instead. Not a great route either, but at least it kept the coniferous confusion to a minimum.

Superb viewpoint. The pillar has been trashed but was intact on my previous visit in Sept 1999. Easiest route follows track shown on Explorer360 below Clachadow farm GR947274 to ford the stream and then enter woods at 944278. In 5m turn right steeply up a fire break. Follow feint path up to emerge on open hill below a crag. Climb left around the crag trending right into a broad gully and climb to a small cairn. Remains of trig point are above left.

Shattered remnants of a cylindrical trig, with evidence of FB recess, lying around the still-intact centre Bolt. No FB or spider. Fine crag-girt summit, hard to reach thru dense Sitka with a few steep crags to avoid. From SW, beeline from 941280 ran into awkward crags; descended SW, found a track at head of stream, followed this SSE, exited at 942942, then rushy wet pasture back to bridge. This latter route possibly the best.

Jon Metcalf reports (May2007): The base block with survey rivet and four long anchor bolts is still in place. The concrete tube has been smashed into chunks and distributed around the summit.
