Parked at Gresty's Waste and took Sandstone Trail to the north. At a gate we took the Alternative Sandstone Trail to the right which quickly led us to the summit of Old Pale with its towers, radio mast and water works. Knowing that the challenge had only just begun, we started searching for the trig inside the water works compound which is readily accessible. Having spent some time examining the undergrowth, we eventully spotted a hole in the hedge through which an iron gate can be seen. Once through the gate the trig can be easily seen. It is adjacent to the round concrete water tank. What a sad fate for something that would once have stood proudly commanding the hilltop! We had a quick look at the modern stone circle before retracing our steps.

Visited on a short diversion from the Sandstone Trail. The hill summit has excellent long distance views and considerable work has gone into making it a visitor attraction by construction of a stone platform with large inscribed standing stone and several other standing stones surrounding it inscribed with the various counties visible from the location. Sadly the trig pillar wasn't invited to the party and has been cast into the long grass, and brambles, amongst the concrete and steel jungle of pylons, transmitters, high fencing and water towers. It is still accessible through an old small gate but may take a bit of searching without a grid reference. Rather sad.

This pillar is mentioned quite a few times in John Davies's Primary Trigs in Wales, with observations made to here from Moel Fammau (2961), Cyrn y Brain (S1546) and Cadair Berwyn (S1545). Unfortunately this afternoon such far away views were hazed out. Also, many of the rays are permanentely blocked anyway by all the summit clutter; buildings and masts. This is where the more recent bolt (TP10745) on the adjacent water tower comes into its own with a far superior view of the surrounding area. And with the added thrill of climbing up the external ladder to access the roof I'm sure it'll soon become a firm T:UK favourite.

Out on a walk from Frodsham and our route passed along the Sandstone Trail to the west. So, the opportunity to detour up the hill was just too good not to miss. Not the easiest to get to with the proliferation of masts and buildings but we gained access to the area through a small bolted gate by a brick building to the west of the pillar. Then made access to the pillar through a gap in some rusty railings. I have described the pillar as slightly damaged because of the top, see photo. Almost hidden in the proliferation of nettles and grass, but it is there and can be reached. Not much of a view unless you particularly like masts and buildings.
