From parking due N on good track to SE 4787 9490 then up over heather moorland. The stone-built pillar sits in an expanse of heather moorland approx 100m WSW of the summit of Black Hambleton hill. A mortar plug replaces the missing central cap; all sight holes sealed. Good views in all directions.

East to locate and access; just off the Cleveland Way and I visited while doing 1st part of a Durham to Dorset walk. Magnificent views and well worth the short detour from the path. Previously visited on 29th May 2007.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 29th June 1953 costing 16.9s.9d. Computed as secondary triangulation station SE38/8 within the Harrogate block during 1955. Levelled for height also in 1955. Last maintained by the OS in April 1975. SITE VISIT: Bagged together with neighbouring trig Black Hambleton. Public car park at SE479958. Followed waymarked track to SE478944 then turned northeast making beeline for summit of Black Hambleton, even though trig is named Dodd End by the OS. Stone built pillar in good condition. Spider centre filled with concrete. Flush bracket faces WSW ~247. All horizontal sighting holes plugged. 360 open outlook with some long views from top. Continued to S7676, Little Moor (that trig being named Black Hambleton).

Great views but not sure why this trig point is called Dodd End when it is shown on the map as on Black Hambleton on the map (trig point by that name over 4 km away!) Weird! Grid ref calculated from map - forgot satnaV!

I was renting out the neatby youth Hostel in Osmotherley so whist the rest of the group were finishing off their breakfast and beginning to tidy up I escaped up here. Parked at the car park to the north and along the Cleveland Way and then a bit of a detour to this trig point. The other trig to the south was too good an opportunity to miss so I yomped there and back in about an hour. Not surprisingly the hostel was nice and tidy by the time I got back

Passed nearby whilst walking a stretch of the Cleveland way from Helmsley to Osmotherley with my walking group - The Irregulars, LDWA. So this slight detour was an opportunity to visit that was just too good not to miss. Just a yomp through the snow across open moorland. Nice stone built pillar with concrete top. Everything in good order. Very misty so no views today but guess that they must be good.

Approached along the Cleveland Way from Sutton Bank to the south. Instead of returning back the way I'd come for some reason I decided that it would be a good idea to head across to the pillar at Stiltons. Maybe in summer but at this time of year I ended the walk in darkness, not pleasant.
