Day 3 of a stay in Hawes CAMC site and walked up from there on a day which promised good weather in stark contrast to the first 2 days. We weren't disappointed and enjoyed the yomp along the Pennine Way on a sunny morning with a gentle breeze. Stopped at the nearest point for some sausage sarnies and I nipped up (well, climbed slowly) to the summit and kept feet dry. Stunning views. Route back via Roman Road was a slog alleviated by the weather and lovely countryside. Pint of Theakstons in The Crown quenched my thirst, then we showered, changed and bimbled back into town for a curry at Voujon before an early morning start to drive back to Devon on Good Friday!

Not sure if that's Pen-y-Ghent or Ingleborough behind my enormous chin!

I had been looking for an appropriate trig to bring up my 250th pillar. I came up with Eccleshill nr Bradford. (CCL= 250). But in the end an evening walk with a grandstand view of The 3 Peaks- Yorkshire's finest ;was more appealing than the middle of a Shipley housing estate. Set off from Kidhow Gate in the cool of the day, past shake holes and peat hags to reach a gently sloping grassy top.As it turned out,Dodd Fell would have been more appropriate for my 1500th pillar.(Roman DDD= 1500).

Supposed to be a long weekend but the storm, which is hinted at by dramatic cloudscapes and a blustery breeze on the Pennine Way is cutting it short. So great to do this wonderful hill, from a small space above Gayle over the ridge to the PW then back on the southern flanks. Stunning with a huge moon and some silhouetted kingfishers as we get back at dusk.

Original centre cap is retained, indented lettering; front and RHS sight holes open. Extensive moorland views.

Probably not a great idea to have chosen today to visit this trig, after several days of incessant rain and lots of localised flooding in the valleys. Summit not as boggy as expected though. Walked up from Gayle along the Pennine Way and then the narrow, often very faint path from Rock Edge Cottage, from there along to Wether Fell, which was very wet. Good views of mostly empty fells; great if you like solitude.

Damaged, with repairs to the top. The summit area was quite dry and even the moat around the trig shown in some photographs had dried out. Approached this one from the Pennine Way. Nice profile of Ingleborough.

Visited as part of a sweep on the 'Fellsman' - why otherwise would anyone be as stupid as to visit Dodd Fell in the dark (or in the daylight for that matter!) A dreadful night! Continuous rain all the way from Redshaw and the ground underfoot was absolutely saturated. As usual managed to step into a thigh-deep puddle on the descent to Fleet Moss. I think it is the same puddle that 'captures' me every time I do this sweep. A wet and miserable experience - hence the score of 1

Always a difficult trig point to visit as its location varies depending upon which map scale one is using. The location on the OS 1:50 000 is slightly different to that on the OS 1:25 000. The pillar is slightly damaged on the top and on the day I visited was surrounded by a 'moat'. It has also got a slight lean to the north!

Set within it's own moat !! Came up from Ribblehead along the wide stoney track that's not the best walk on the planet. Coming from the south along the Pennine Way you need to climb the open moor immediately after Heator Hole - after the first rise you'll see a faint but discernable path heading diagonally NE up the hill that ultimately leads to the trig. Good view today back to Ingleborough and Whernside, very windy and the hill plateau is very moist. The pillar's had a bit of attention at the top but bearing up OK. Walk ended up back in Horton via Low Green Field Ings & the Pennine Way. No cars, on foot!
