Reading through the recent logs I saw that Ramblingpaul had logged this surface block at Sluice House Farm. This is very near where I work at St Mellons so as I haven't bagged a block before I thought it a good lunchtime jolly to go and have a look. Easy when you know where it is. Right, where is my next surface block?

1" bolt in block 0.74m back from back edge of NE end of parapet as per sketch. Under brambles but easily spotted after measuring the exact spot. Drizzly start to the day.

Easy spot as uncovered. Rough concrete block with 1" bolt affixed. Very scrubby, brambley, dirty, muddy spot at NE end of SE parapet. Didn't spend any time cleaning this up.

Last YOSM of the trip - YSM539 Sluice House Farm Once at the location we didn't hold out much hope of finding it as lots of debris had been washed up. But I cleared away some mud with my boot and Mr U2 shouted 'what's that' and there it was, left uncovered, so bag it now!

#334 P#244 P2016#44. Did t have much hope finding this due to the sludge that has been washed up from the flooding. Very muddy. Previous pics showed it beside the brambles. I wasn't getting my clean boots muddy but MRS TJR just jumped right in there and started kicking about. She then hit what might be the block and then I spotted the bolt and gave it a wee clean with a hankie. Well done that wummin.

Finally, a chance to use my new shovel to both find and excavate the surface block. I'm a happy man.

In the area today and thought I'd try for this one. Previous visitors have cleared the area a bit so I managed to locate using past logs and descriptions. The area was full of litter and general debris, not a place to make a pilgrimage to!

Easier than expected! I came armed with shears and a spade but when I turned up I looked round the end of the bridge into a cleared patch and there it was. So I cleared a bit more bramble and earth so that the next seeker should have an easy time too. East end of the bridge almost inline with the end stones (south side) about 50 cm from the wall itself.

Searched for a while having a pretty good idea where it was having looked at previous logs.... Brambles waist high, roadworks road sign nearby and a watching workman all meant we decided to give up. Darn it!

Luckily we had the trusty snow shovel in the car as bolt was buried under debris and soil. Cut back old brambles to access it.

The trig consists of a bolt in a surface block next to a bridge over a reen in the Gwent Levels to the northeast of Cardiff. It was soon found although a few brambles had to be brushed aside and the ground prodded a few times with my trusty tent peg. The surrounding landscape is of flat farmland. Some Welsh hills provide a back drop to the north.

Used Etrex Legend (s/w 3.7 & 5m reported accuracy) to record waypoint in DMS (WGS84) then converted using OSTN02. Input N 51’30’27.5’’, W 3’4’40.8’’, 6m. Output E 325282, N 179296, -45m hence ST2528279296. Curiously, altitude is way off the reported height by the OS. The OS give ellipsoid height as 56.159m and orthometric height as 5.325.
