Really struggled to find this one in thick mist! I don't mind DNF a cache but not a trig point. It had been quite an effort to get here. I was so releived when it suddenly loomed out of the mist. As others have said it is quite damaged. It looks like a game of Jenga!!

Nice location, Views from trig very good but curtailed by higher ground to the NE. Stone built pillar in poor condition, but is still standing. FB missing & a sizeable chunk of NW edge has also gone (possible collapse). Lots of crack lines but amazingly top (with spider & cap) is in good nick.

Parked up in dufton and walked up the pennine way to high cup nick first and what a awesome place this is.Then struck NW across rough moorland to the stonebuilt trig.Views from here were good trig has damage fb missing but retains cap walked out to blackshaw head the nuttall 2000 er came down the old mine road at threlkeld side,P.S. At this time of year the appleby fair is in full swing and all areas were alive with romany folk,Had to pass through the fair and appleby town centre to get back to A66 eastbound wont forget what i saw in a hurry it was an experience!

Stunning views of the west and south with a hint of Scotland to north. Glacial Cross and Dun slide on the horizon

A cold snowy slog from Dufton, take in the Marilyn of Dufton Pike but it's just too glorious not to rise to the plateau, watch the sun setting blue cast moor turns gold

Icy boots, Sign of a really good walk, drinking water beginning to freeze

Hiked up to this one from Appleby via near-by High cup Nick. Went onto to climb Knock Fell, Great Dun Fell, and finally Cross fell in an epic walk eventually down into Langwathby. You can follow a detailed walking route and write up of this walk by typing 'Fell Finder' into Google. Thanks.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 17th May 1960 costing 29.5s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NY71/T7 in 1962. Levelled for height also in 1962. Last maintained by the OS in July 1983. SITE VISIT: Three trig 20+ mile circuit starting and finishing in Dufton. Parked in village, NE side of road by information board at NY690250. Followed track NE up past Pusgill House and old mine workings to high point at NY727282, then 1km SSW gentler climb over rough terrain to top. Stone built pillar has been robbed of two flush brackets. Originally 10808, then 10769. Spider retains original OS centre cap with raised large wide letters. All sight holes plugged. 360 open outlook includes a panorama over to the Lake District and an upward views to higher Pennine tops. Continued via Blackstone Edge onwards for Meldon Hill.

Walked up track from Dufton. Dense cloud reduced visibility to 10m so went too far on track before heading off piste to the trig....hence had to switch on the GPS to get us through the peat soup and find the trig on the edge of the escarpment. Quicker & drier descent through the barium mine debris to reach the track lower down (keeping far enough to the right to avoid the Melmerby Scar limestone cliffs). Score could have been higher if there was a view.

My 248th 2000' mountain in England (Nuttall list) and climbed by the easy track up from Dufton and then returned via High Cup Nick and the Pennine Way on a beautiful (weatherwise) day. Trig point not at the summit (unfortunately) and some vandal has taken the flush bracket.

Plug intact but FB missing. Evidence of past repairs to pillar. Conditions changing from dense low cloud to bright sunshine and then back again. Approached from Dufton via miners track then continued over to High Cup. Light covering of snow with boggy sections lurking.

Stonebuilt pillar, FB missing, metal cap, wide raised letters. Apparently rebuilt or repointed in last few years, with several smallish pieces of mortared stone scattered around. Presumably the large stone was dislodged later: appears stable. Visited with Hard Hill and Cross Fell, from end of public road above Knock.

Stone and mortar trig,replaced dislodged corner stone and shored it up,however the whole structure is unsound and will I fear collapse someday soon,My route from Dunn fell took me over some very spongy ground but well worth the effort with some great views.

Above date is most recent of three visits, first being on 7.4.83. Squat, dumpy trig with block missing from NW corner of base. In good condition on previous visits. Where's the line between slightly damaged and damaged ? Trig does not stand on highest point of Backstone Edge which is a hundred yards north east.

My first intentional trig pointWent there to check accuracy of my GPS, still not sure though. Views are outstanding,well worth the walk. One stone near the bottom of the pillar is becoming dislodged
