On the way up to Celtic park for the Aberdeen Inverness League Cup Final. Parked with son Jamie at the cattle grid due west of the hill. Ignored the sign for bulls etc. Misty and Jamie a resistant teenager but eventually joined me and romped up hill ahead of me while I slowly plodded. Short but steep ascent over rough tussock grass, boggy in places. Pillar has toppled; cap missing.

Toppled pillar atop the well-placed Dungavel Hill (east). Saw the same signs as coinea but the fields with the mapped track were heaving with coos and calves and, as a result, did the sane option and avoided those fields entirely. Parked at Roberton and came up the west side of the main wood in the field. Steep ascent but easy going as sheep pasture. Near the point where the wood and road meet, there's a little path. Took the metalled road as far as it'd go and then up to the top. NIce walk. Excellent 360 views. No coos. Pillar in good nick other than being toppled! The pillar internals are laid out clearly. Cap present with sunken lettering.

At parking area by cattle grid there is a warning notice--field with trig has bulls etc,see photo. Did not see any cattle, but could see two hang gliders laying out their equipment on the ground halfway up the hill and also someone flying a model aircraft further up so ignored notice.

Second visit. For photographs and GPS reading. SITE VISIT: Parking by cattle grid at NS932305. Pillar was cracked through at bottom of FB level and has now fallen onto its side. Spider retained OS cap with deep indented lettering, since recorded as stolen between May 2012 and May 2013 (Al Carty & Jon Glew respectively). Back sight pipe still plugged, others open and the pillar bolt is seen from above due to the fallen pillar. The pillar body has fallen southwards and landed with the FB on the side facing eastwards. The FB would have faced ENE ~112° when the pillar was upright. Open grazing hill with views to Tinto, Mendick Hill, Lamington Hill, Culter Fell, Tewsgill Hill, Green Lowther and Harten Hill.

First visit. To record FB number. HISTORY: Pillar completed 12th May 1950 costing £19.3s.9d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NS83/T16 in 1950. Levelled for height also in 1950. Last maintained by the OS in September 1976. SITE VISIT: Pillar upright back then but cracked through and showing signs of weathering. Note the open cracks either side of the flush bracket. FB photographed 26/08/1992, GRP. FOOTNOTE: I wish I had photographed the whole pillar when it was still standing 26/08/1992. Before it was toppled, my FB photograph shows the crack which was to cause the severance of the two parts. Even back then I made note of the fact that this pillar was severely weathered.
