Have been aware of this one since seeing it from a distance on the Southern Upland Way in September 2008. Glorious day for it, and I even managed a 15 minute snooze beside the trig in lovely warm sunshine.

Fourth visit. For GPS reading and up to date photographs. HISTORY: Pillar completed 18th June 1936, cost not on record. Computed as primary triangulation station PP313 within Figure 3 of the OSGB36 retriangulation network during 1937. Levelled for height in 1959. Last routinely maintained by the OS in 1977, but continues in service as a GPS passive station. SITE VISIT: Approached from north. Parked in entrance to forest track at NT250383. Followed farm road network (walkers only) via Hayston and continuing southwards on track until 400m beyond Glensax. After crossing the footbridge a feint path climbs the NNE flank of Dun Rig which eventually leads to the summit. Heather clad moor. Pillar in good condition, GPS plate affixed. Spider retains original OSTS cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces SSE, ~159. Vented through sight hole on FB face. VIEW: Full 360 panorama includes Arthurs Seat, Dundreich, Blackhope Scar, Lammer Law, Windlestraw Law, Sayers Law, Twin Law, Dirrington Great Law, William Law, Black Hill NT72, Minch Moor, Eildon Mid Hill, Newton Tors, The Cheviot, Windy Gyle, Deadwater Moor, Greatmoor Hill, Tudhope Hill, Wisp Hill, Loch Fell, Criffel, Hart Fell, Broad Law, Dollar Law, Blackcraig Hill, Culter Fell, Pykestone Hill, Tinto, Broughton Heights, Black Mount, West Cairn Hill, Scald Law, Allermuir Hill, West Lomond.

On my way round the Glansax horseshoe anti-clockwise. Never saw another soul for the just short of 6 hours all the the way around except a couple of dog walkers where I parked the car at the end of Glen Road in Peebles - perfect. Might have had something to do with the start of the Beltane Festival in Peebles today. Great views. Perhaps picky but noted a small bit of the pillar missing on the south west corner at the base hence the 'slightly damaged' log. Great views (almost coat to coast).

As I log this I realise that it was exactly 3 years ago that I visited this trig point. I was on a John Muir Trust work party at Glen Lude and took the day off with the intention of heading on to Scawd Law after Dun Rig and back by Birkscairn hill. This involved a fair bit of up and down but I found that I was making such slow progress and felt exhausted on every up slope so I headed down to The Glen and eventually gor back to the base at Glen Lude over 10 hours after I had started what should have been a 5-6 hour walk. I was wiped out and as a result took myself off to my GP when I got home. The long and the short of it was that I had a hyperthyroid condition and one symptom was my heart racing and as such was working inefficiently.

This pillar is one of the oldest on the network (May 1936) and is still in excellent condition, no cracks whatsoever. Since my visit of 1/05/99, it has been GPS plated and repainted. Mystery surrounds this GPS plate. This station is not listed in the GPS Passive Station database. The paint is now starting to peel again. The spider still retains its original OS plug with engraved shallow font. The eroded ground around the pillar has been repaired with new turf. The SSE facing flush bracket is also in mint condition. Truly a pleasure to visit a trig like S1571, particularly on the summer solstice of 2003. Dun Rig is the highest point in the Glenrath Heights, four miles due south of Peebles. Revisited and photographed 21/06/03, GRP.
