This took a few minutes to find, I was prodding about 2 feet away and finding plenty of stones. Once in the right spot, very little excavation was needed, just back-heeling the encroaching grass away, not bad considering it's nearly three years since the last recorded find. The alignment of the telephone wire and the old wooden post on the opposite side of the road were the best references as the distant monument was hidden by a hedge.

The view across the road whilst standing on the block. Extension of the alignment of the telephone wire is the other good reference.

Easily located with the aid of edfielden's second photo below - the fence post was a perfect guide. The block is reasonable clear, but the grass etc is encroaching, needs someone with a spade, or trowel, to clear it again.

Re-visit as I failed to find it last time. Not exactly clear in the long verge, but someone had been recently as the grass was trodden down. Eds advice about being in line with the telephone wire is helpful.

The fencepost alignment with the monument as given on the OS sketch is no longer valid (fencepost missing? or hedge too high?) but the telephone wire alignment certainly is. I spent about 15 minutes prodding and scraping in the wrong place (1.5m too close to the telephone pole) before pacing out the distance from the pole again and consulting the OS photo. Thereafter the concrete and bolt were easily found but required pushing back of vegetation. I have left it uncovered but have also placed four stones (the best I could find nearby) leading up the verge to the bolt, to help others with locating it. The closest to the road is also the largest of the stones (8in x 5in) and is 1 yard into the verge from the roadside. The fencepost almost opposite should be aligned with the largest of a distant row of trees. Position logged from GPS device accurate to 5m.

Previously visited but not found on 3rd December. Easily spotted and the OS sketch was not needed now that it has been excavated. The visibility was a lot better last time I was here. There is a handy gap in the fence opposite which gave the site a fine view westward over the Vale of Berkeley to the wooded hills of the Forest of Dean and the Welsh Hills beyond and northward along the Cotswold scarp.

With the aid of the OS linksite sketch this was an easy find, being on the side of the lane where I had parked the car to find the Horton pillar. I cleared away the encroaching vegetation so it is all open to view at the present time. Some views across the adjacent fields, especially NW.
