Fab spring day for a long (and sometimes boggy) walk in the New Forest. Circular route from Holmsley to Burley and the White Buck Inn, via this trig. Significant forestry ops in progress (including large bonfires from this and also swailing going on) - surrounding wood has been much reduced. Trig has good views to E - no cap or plug and E s/hole open, but otherwise is structurally sound (especially considering a tree coming down has missed it by inches).

A near miss

The pillar stands in the corner of a tree plantation on a hill in the New Forest to the south east of Ringwood. It lacks a cap or plug and has FB S2703. There are a couple of small chips out of the top edges of the pillar. It was visited on a walk along heathland paths and tracks from Burley. The trig looks over an expanse of the rippling heath of the New Forest in the east. Through the thinned out plantation to the west the nearby woodlands on the western fringe of the forest can be seen below with some of the distant hilltops on the edge of Cranborne Chase and the Dorset Downs in the distance. Elsewhere on my walk curlews were encountered loitering in the rough grass and numerous small birds were chattering in the bushes on the lower slopes of the downs. Many ponies were mingling around Whitten Bottom.
