(3286) A few parking options available - couple of spots at the crossing itself, but both was filled today, grass verge at the junction, or a little further S down Hambleton Road at field entrance. Which is the one I went for. Decent walk to the pillar. Wondering when to deviate off the PRoW, I realised I already had! Good wide strip of land gets you to the pillar. A few other folks dog walker so route well used. Sunlight reflecting off nearby Rutland Water was dazzling. Pillar is good overall condition - centre cap missing and infilled.

About a mile south of Oakham pulled over on west side of road at farm access level crossing opposite signpost for Egleton village. Through gate over railway line and west along field edge. After about 150 metres headed south, over small embankment to field. Wasn’t sure whether to follow east field boundary or continue west. Followed tractor tracks midway between the two, uphill roughly south west. Steady climb not too steep of about three hundred meters. Pillar came into view at top of field on a small uncultivated spur so accessible from south. Good views across to Rutland Water to the east. Cap plugged.

An easy walk up from the railway crossing - left side of the hedge! Just as we found the pillar the blue skies deserted us so the views over Rutland water were not as good as we hoped they would be. Great first trig of the New Year though and lovely to see about 10 hares playing in the field and eating the delicate new shoots of the farmers crop!

A joint visit with Carole. We parked at the road junction to the north. Walked along the waymarked path over the level crossing. We followed the hedgeline to a small gate (and cache) to get into the right field. Then followed a track up the hill and then cut across the grass to the pillar when it came into view. The pillar is in excellent condition but the plug is long gone and replaced by a concrete/resin one. Lovely view point over Rutland Water and the town of Oakham. Our return route was just to follow the track down and this leads to a large double gate at the side of the level crossing.

Parked in lane to Egleton then, as others have described, followed ROW across railway. The little gate at the corner of the trig field is still there but a little overgrown. Trig appeared clearly as hill was climbed. Great views over Rutland Water. Bitterly cold wind left face glowing. Amused to see as I left trig a long line of sheep heading up towards the trig itself.
