Revisit Whilst Visiting Robert Wilson's Grave Marker to place a Poppy Cross. It is thought that Robert Wilson was the chief beacon guard at Pinhaw in 1805. He and his two helpers had a small hut about 30m from the beacon, the footings of which can still be traced. During the winter of 1804-05 there was severe weather that trapped the men in their huts for a lengthy period. Provisions were running low and Robert volunteered to try and reach Moor Side Farm to replenish them. Despite pleas from his helpers to wait until the weather broke he set off with his bag and his milk can never to be seen alive again. His body was discovered a short time later some 150m from the shelter. A stone was erected on the spot where he was found but whether this is his actual burial site is a mystery.

His grave here was/is marked but he was subsequently disinterred and re-buried in Elslack churchyard.

First visited on the Pinhaw Moor Fell Race from Earby back in the 80s. Today I was an easy-peaser and walked with my family and dog from the carpark. It was cold and clear and views up the Dales were good.

Execellent views today, nice 360 degree panorama, unfortunately some idiot had forgotten to take his Box Brownie with him!! Came up from Skipton along a higgledy piggledy route to join the Pennine Way and ended up in Cononley. Nice walk. Easy peasy-ers & plastics can bag it from the nearby car park.

Visited to record FB number. The pillar was completed 14th April 1948 costing 19.12s.11d. Later in 1948 this marker was computed for triangulation as secondary station SD96/8 the the Skipton block. Flush bracket S4451 was levelled for height in 1962. This marker was last maintained by the OS in May 1976. OS archive has S4457. I had this one on my lists as Pinhaw Beacon for the many years before the OS official names became available through the public domain. Heather clad top.
