Revisit Whilst Visiting Robert Wilson's Grave Marker to place a Poppy Cross. It is thought that Robert Wilson was the chief beacon guard at Pinhaw in 1805. He and his two helpers had a small hut about 30m from the beacon, the footings of which can still be traced. During the winter of 1804-05 there was severe weather that trapped the men in their huts for a lengthy period. Provisions were running low and Robert volunteered to try and reach Moor Side Farm to replenish them. Despite pleas from his helpers to wait until the weather broke he set off with his bag and his milk can never to be seen alive again. His body was discovered a short time later some 150m from the shelter. A stone was erected on the spot where he was found but whether this is his actual burial site is a mystery.

Visited to record FB number. The pillar was completed 14th April 1948 costing £19.12s.11d. Later in 1948 this marker was computed for triangulation as secondary station SD96/8 the the Skipton block. Flush bracket S4451 was levelled for height in 1962. This marker was last maintained by the OS in May 1976. OS archive has S4457. I had this one on my lists as Pinhaw Beacon for the many years before the OS official names became available through the public domain. Heather clad top.

Cloudy day. Walking alone now until meeting up with my companion at Malham. Warm and getting warmer as I descend finall off the moors and into the valleys. Change of rock type soon - off the grit and shales and into the limestone - bye bye peat bogs hello springy grass. Cup of tea in Gargrave at the cafe whose owner I met at Top Withins yesterday.
