Stopped short by a road closure. Walked 4km through Wheldrake and north east to Elvingtton. First visit for a long time. Spoilt by a huge pile of builders rubbish from a house renovation that's going on .

Niether visible nor readily accessible. It was a case of - if at first you do not succeed try, try and try again. I first tried to approach from a track but my way into the field was blocked by a deep gully - recently excavated for floods? Then I entered the field through an open gateway from the road going behind the bungalows round the edge of the field. The head high maize crop prevented a sighting but by following some tractor tracks I caught a glimps of the pillar so was able to use other tracks to reach it without trampling down any of the crops. The only views were of maize! The pillar is in good condition with a concrete plug and one hole open.
