Flight from Tingwall, 20mins approx. There's time on a day trip for a circuit of the island including all (most) of the hills (Sheep Rock and the 2 other stacks would be tricky to fit in). Pillar sits to the W of the island summit point, in a small shelter cairn. A composite cap plugs the centre tube; RHS sight hole open. Extensive seascapes to S, W & N.

One of the best days of sunny weather in Shetland so far in 2013. Can't entirely agree that the WW2 debris should be cleared/tidied up, the remains are a reminder of where some of our countrymen were stationed and served their country. Without the lumps of concrete, twisted metalwork etc it would be a far less memorable place. I like it.

A day return flight from Tingwall (£62.50) gave me 6 hours to explore Fair Isle. On the flight out I sat in the co-pilot's seat with a great view and wore a headset so I could hear the ATC/approach chatter. (See video of landing at http://youtu.be/bHOhvIUB9iA ) On arrival at Fair Isle I waited for the plane to depart again before crossing the airstrip and following the track up Ward Hill to bag the trig first. I sheltered briefly from a light shower at the mast buildings before continuing to the summit up the old winch rails. Aesthetically the only disappointment was the WWII debris at the summit, otherwise the views and setting were magnificent. Historically however the remains of a remote outpost of the war effort are a stark reminder of the hardships of conflict 70 years ago. The pillar is some metres west of the high point of the hill, surrounded by broken concrete bits built into a low shelter. FB faces E; top has plain ?metal replacement cap; N sighthole open, all others plugged; GPS plaque. Note that North Ronaldsay Lighthouse (TP11895) and Sumburgh Head Lighthouse (TP9646) are both visible from here on a clear day, WSW and NNE respectively. After sitting a while by the pillar and admiring the view I walked round some of the island watching the birds and taking in the solitude of the place before heading to the post office where I bought some postcards. Then it was back to the airstrip for the return flight.

Would give it more than 10 if that were possible. First plane to island last plane back to mainland. The weather was perfect the island also perfect. I had looked forward to my visit to Fair Isle for 5 months and nothing disappointed. I walked around the whole island taking photographs and storing the memories. A very special day.

White trig, blue sea, blue sky Is this really the north of Scotland in summer 2012. I never imagined I would get sun burnt in Fair Isle.

I came up here on the track that crosses the landing strip and was treated to great views of the southern portion of Shetland in the distance. Ward Hill itself was a bit of a disappointment with all the rubble strewn about, but that did little to dull my enjoyment of the moment. I followed the coast around to the North Lighthouse and then back along the road to my digs at the bird observatory. All in all the whole island experience of my visit to Fair Isle still remains one of my most special in the British Isles and I wait for the day that I can go there again.
