(2990) Parked by the cemetery and then a short walk to the pillar. Situated on a roadside verge so readily accessible. Pillar all good and still retaining its metalwork. Interesting info board next to it, detailing, amongst others things, the achievement of a local astronomer. Pillar history: Built on the 23rd of February 1952, at a cost of £20 8s 0d. Last maintained by the OS in May of 1979.

I had a day in Peterborough so took the chance to do some easy bagging in the area. First stop Farcet. Just parked outside the cemetery and strolled along to this one. The info board makes it a little more interesting than it's mundane location would otherwise warrant.

Diverted from a journey from Northumberland to Suffolk to visit the area I briefly lived in, age 7 until I was 10. I remember me and my mates cycling along dusty lanes between beet fields, the towering chimneys of the brick works, miles of conveyor belts trundling the dug clay across the landscape...most of those fields we roamed 50 years ago are now housing estates, or Amazon depots, or dual carriageway road systems with roundabouts every half a kilometre...pity poor Peterborough...I think this is the closest TP to where I grew up in the (then) hamlet of Orton Waterville. Given how awful the development (‘progress’) has been the idea of going back to see the old house was abandoned I just visited the other 2 TPs close by. That said, this is a decent little roadside TP with a surprisingly interesting information panel next to it. The stuff about Whittlesey Mere is fascinating.

I parked approx. 90m to the N.E. in the layby for the burial ground . The pillar is sandwiched between a busy road and a broad tarmac cycle path . The pillar is in very good condition, no cracks or chips, FB and spider intact . There is a wide panorama of flat fen farmland to the south east, the OS map shows a spot height of 19m for the trig and the fens are in the 5m to zero contour areas, so it's not a spectacular vantage point !

All intact. A new cycle way has been built behind it, so it now sits on a rough grassy strip between that and the road.

This is simplicity itself to access; the pillar is in a field right beside the B1091 road to the south of Farcet. Park at the cemetary and walk south along the road for twenty yards or so; the trig is immediately to the left.
