Up track alongside Catshaw Greave. I couldn’t find path mentioned in other posts which continues to fence line. Just ploughed through the heather. Once at fence a thin, nicely frozen, track led to pillar. I measured the concrete plug of the pillar to be about 8ft.

First of 2 trigs on a 12.5 mile hike from Sykes and back via Totridge Fell trig. Beautiful clear sunny day but a bit of a slog over open moorland to both trigs. There was a rather large colony of seagulls nesting near the trig … sounded like Whitby when a fishing boat returns.

So it was at Hazelhurst Fell pillar that it was decided to continue over to Fell Top 12/12 and complete the Dozen. A fair slog, however when the conditions are perfect and no navigational issues from Totridge it is worth continuing. Sadly a toppled pillar showing extensive foundations which was unable to save it. A perfect line off Stable Breast to follow the grouse butts to the track and onwards to Abbeystead.a perfect round and gifted to the memory of the Bowland Dozen.

Up Catshaw Greave. At the end of the gravel track keep parallel with the stream and you will find a path which leads to the fence and then turn left to the trig. Trig still toppled . Scenery is lovely and great wildlife with Red Grouse, Curlews and Sand Martins.

I walked up Langden Brook beyond the path until not far from the summit, some tricky stream walking but good fun if you enjoy that terrain. Then up onto Hawthornthwaite Fell Top - still 10,000 seagulls nesting up there. I wondered into the 'zone' by mistake, little ones running around and nests with eggs whilst they guard and threaten from above. Keep to the boundary fence on the ridge, it is just clear. Avoid the area between that fence and Langden Brook. Trig still fallen! Then I walked back via Holdron Moss and Top of Blaze Moss, very dry up there just now so surprisingly easy walking for this area. A shame it has fallen, so much peat erosion unfortunately.

From roadside pull-in (SD 5585 5212). Good track up Catshaw Greave, then over rough heather moorland, apparently there are tracks, but none visible in the snow. Pillar had quite some depth to foundations to reach bed rock, but it wasn't enough to save it from toppling after severe peat erosion. Centre cap missing, no plug; sight holes not checked. FB faces down so a little awkward to get a centred shot of it.

Shooters track then faint footpath along side of Catshaw Greave to fence line. Continuing northeast along fence line to trig point. The ground is very dry at the moment a good time to go. No great views today poor visibility.

Followed the shooting track up the side of Catshaw Grieve and fence along the "ridge" to the Toppled Trig which sits forlornly in an area of peat hags , the cap and the right sight hole are open and the Flush bracket faces the ground, the trig points to the South West 230`. continued along the fence and cut across the moor -eventually following a waymarked route to the shooting track at Black Clough

walked over from Hazlehurst fell trig following shooters track to its end at Tom Warings well, then across moor to c.p. boundary fence and followed this to trig. Down via Stake House Fell to Grizedale Lea reservoir and along road to c.p. at delph lane

Previously visited in the 80s when I worked at Catshaw Farm, gathering the fell sheep.It still had a decent amount of peat around it then. Sad to see it now on its side, with its amazing depth of foundation exposed and unable to save the pillar from the rigours of erosion.Followed the boundary fence eastwards for a couple of miles to the top ,then down via Catshaw Greave

Followed fence from Fairsnape, its rather rough, and past a seagull colony to trig. Pillar has now toppled because of the high level of erosion around the base, you would have needed ladders to climb up it in the past.

Amazing foundations on this particular pillar - just about photograph FB from the underside, spider still retained despite attempts by others to remove. Walked in from county boundary stone on yellow just above Sniddle Holes - walked across Blaze moss and Holdron moss along side boundary fence, would not recommend this route unless like us ii was in the middle of a hot/dry spell of weather. Gulls up around the TP not overwhelmed by our presence. Return journey via Langdon castle(Ruin) & Brook much more pleasant.

Approached across access land from the cattle grid to the north in the company of six other triggers. Cloud base was 350m so there was very little to see from the summit. I shared out some flapjack for the fallen pillar and then took a short bit of video footage which can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdlO4E0anRM .

Parking for a few cars near the track along Catshaw Greave. Followed track and intermittent paths to the fence. Crossed the fence at the gate then reasonably easy going (given the recent weather) to the trig. There's a large colony of gulls to the east of the fence. Very hazy

Parked at start of path which runs alongside Catshaw Greave. Along this path to turning circle, then followed tracks up to fenceline. From there it was along the very boggy fence line to the top of the hill and the fallen trig. Sunny, cool day.

HISTORY: Pillar completed in July 1948 costing £28.0s.0d. Computed as secondary triangulation station SD74/5 during 1948. Levelled for height also in 1948. Last maintained by the OS in May 1976. OS Archive reports "catastrophic peat erosion unusable". SITE VISIT: Approached from north. Parked south side of road just west of cattle grid at SD575533. Across rough marshy ground to join mapped track at SD578529, following track up to its end then direct line to summit. Pillar and foundations toppled by OS for H&S reasons. Sunny summer evening, best time to visit as sun lights FB face which is (almost) underside. The vultures have been by. They've tried to remove the spider, and failed! Spider centre open. Pillar fallen southwest, 229° with FB face downward but with 20° tilt to NW. Vented through right facing sight hole with respect to flush bracket. 360° open outlook, but top too flat to deliver any downward views. Returned via direct route and even more rough ground.

From Trough Road passed water work, then Langden Castle and up fellside via Lingy Pits Moss. Really pleased to have frozen ground to walk over.Hawthornthwaite Fell Top, 479m is higher than trig and a P66m at SD581515.

Parked at start of shooters track that winds up by Catshaw Greave.Followed track to turning circle,then right to wooden post,and followed faint path to fence line at top.Then followed fence,best I could,through boggy ground to trig.Flush bracket hard to see and is covered in dirt,not surprising considering!!Good views alround on a dull day.

Walked up the gamekeepers track near ilse of sky farm,this leads almost to ridge then follow fence striaght to trig.Trig has toppled missed my chance to see it,plug gone fb readable underneath,some joker has arranged some old fence posts to read fail,absolutely amazing clear views from top lakes bay blackpool tower!

Dunsop Bridge to Garstang in a typical Englsh summer with intermittent showers and low cloud; just as well there was the boundary fence to follow. Very boggy in places. Trig surviving; just possibly a slight lean westwards. No view.

Is this the highest trig point above ground level?

Hawthornthwaite Fell Top Actually on Duke of Westmoreland's estate, but can be viewed from United Utilities land. Somewhat eroded!!! The Ordnance Survey certainly get top marks for building good foundations!!!©langden

The base of this pillar was so badly eroded at the time of our visit that when Shane sood next to it for the photo her head was just level with the top of the base. the pillar itself seems in quite good condition but it was too dangerous to climb up and look at the spider etc. I can't imagine it lasting too long.
