From a walk visiting Old Winchester Hill, and Salt Hill Reservoir trigpoints, I made my way along the SDW trail up to Butser Hill. windy and starting to cloud over but the views of Fareham and the Solent were still quite clear. The pillar was in fairly good condition, apart from the central part of the Spider was missing, and pieces of concrete from the platform it was resting on were starting to come away.

Trigpoint
Plaque The metal plaque attached to the Southern side of the TP
Pillar The pillar showing the small metal plaque with contact details to OS
Slight Damage The edges of the podium the pillar is on are starting to wear, but as logged in another 'Triggers' visit, the TP is 80 odd years old, hope I look this good at that age, lol
Spider Spider, showing the empty space, I assume this has been removed/damaged
Pillar & Mast The base makes an excellent place to sit and have a break and something to eat, although it was starting to get a little cold, breezy and spitting with rain. It did concern me that the decades of people doing the same thing may have caused the slight damage to it
Paragliding It was quite breezy up there, so much so there were two guys Paragliding off the edge of the hill

One of the Primary Trigs used for triangulation in 1930s but also this hill was used in the first triangulation in the 1790s - so the Great Theodolite would have sat here to make the measurements to create the first accurate maps. With distant views to the south of the Isle of Wight, the Purbecks, WinGreen to the East etc. one can see why it was used.

Some reasonable views south towards Portsmouth and the Solent and also to the north, but nothing too exciting. Located in the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, a popular place with the great unwashed, nice rolling hills with short cropped grassy swaths to take you to the summit of the hill, which is also a Marilyn.

I'm writing this in Aug 2018 having just dug out some old maps and found notes on a few trigs I did 20+ years ago before I even realised this site existed! I have a clear memory of trudging up the spur to this trig and fancy that it was fairly early one morning but that's about it! Anyway, on my 1994 Landranger it's ticked and there's blue highlighter indicating route completed, so it was done. I'm estimating the date as being in the early Summer of 1997, when I clearly did a lot of trigging, mainly recorded in my (sadly lost) little blue book!
