To the Island for a family gathering; a walk along Tennyson Down to the Battery and The Needles. Then swimming at Freshwater Bay for the rest, whilst I slipped away and off up to Five Barrows to claim this trigpoint. A short steep chalky walk from the east, to soon notice a barrow or two, whereupon I easily surmounted the rise to find the pillar with its heartrending message. Pillar has an open cap and two sight holes open. Splendid views across the sea towards the Channel Islands. Then back to join the family for a cream tea in Yarmouth (just a cup of tea for me)! Beautiful day, with the bonus of a pillar.

Walked up from NT car park near Compton Grange. Misty and drizzly but decent views of Highdown Cliffs during ascent. My first IOW pillar.

Pillar in good condition though white paint is looking worse for wear. Great views. Parked to the east and walked up.

Parked at entrance to track from road about half a kilometre east of the pillar. Headed west along track, kept right at fork. Steady ascent, as track begins to level headed north west towards higher ground. On reaching the top, pillar visible in middle of barrows. Heartbreaking dedication plaque on the pillar. Great views all around.

Chained my bike up in the car park where the Tennyson Trail crosses the B3399. Walked West on the Tennyson Trail and cut off to the top of Brook Down after a couple of hundred metres. The pillar can't be seen from the walking track, so you'll just have to head for the top and the raised mounds of the barrows. The white pillar sits in the middle of the Five Barrows. Cracking views right across the island and over The Solent to the mainland.

Parking available on the B3399. The trig is located on a down that commands great views.Tennyson Trail, orchids,songbirds and barrows add value to this pillar. A popular route for DofE walking groups.

Parked just off B3399 , SZ3954485079 . Track-way partially blocked by one of the worst instances of fly-tipping that I have ever encountered ! Walked up track and slightly past pillar ( which is not visible from track) . Pillar is in good condition. Poignant memorial plaque has one brass rivet missing. Outstanding views all around, well worth the modest effort to get up here. On my return trek I was greeted by a pleasant lady driving a Kawasaki utility vehicle, a marked contrast to her two surly-looking male passengers !

Good walk up from carpark by Compton Farm.Sunny day and trig not only in centre of ancient barrows but with stunning views across island, down to the purbecks and across the solent. Deserves at least 9/10!

Parking at junc B3399 / Tennyson Trail. Short pleasant walk up onto Brook Down where trig is sited. Pillar has dirty white coat of paint; cap missing, no plug; 2 sight holes open; on rear a memorial plaque for 2 children, no surname. Extensive 360deg views except NW partially obscured by scrubby woodland.

Another sunny spring day, for a circular walk from Yarmouth via the Freshwater and Tennyson Ways, then back across (very muddy) countryside. Great views, including the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth! Pillar is missing cap or plug, E and W s/holes open, but otherwise good condition.

Easy to locate being just off a public footpath and highly visible on the highest point. I parked just off the road on the B3399 where the footpaths cross near Pay Down. Then just an easy walk up the chalk track. Pillar in good condition but unfortunately the plug has gone walk about.

A day visit to the Isle of Wight. Walking from Yarmouth via Freshwater to Newport then bus back to Yarmouth. This was lunch stop. an excellent view today.

Five Barrows is a Holy site. In the centre of an Iron-age burial ground, and a memorial until at least the 1980's.

Visited on a hazy day when the views were restricted. Cycling up through the golf course from Freshwater was strenuous, but rewarding. Imagine playing golf - what a hoot! Trigs and tumuli seem to go together in this part of the world.
