I can confirm 'the hole' is part filled with water this time of year and a squeeze under the gate would leave you well streaked with mud. Great views and spectacular sunset as consolation prize

I parked to NW and walked diagonally across the field to the reservoir lane. I looked at the limbo approach, then the John Glue up and over, then decided to have a look around the perimeter fence. If you follow your nose round to the left there is a small hole under the fence that you can lye down and wiggle through, this brings you into the compound virtually next to pillar. The hole is in a low lying section and I would imagine it being full of water is worse weather. Pillar good condition located on top of grass bank.

First trig of the day. And its not a good start! I think the gates have been lowered or the tracks have been filled in but I couldnt get under them. I can see the TP from the gate but that is about all. I didnt want to waist too much time trying to find any other ways in so I left and off to the next one.

Followed 21qazxsw's example and crawled under the gates (I knew all those years of limbo dancing would come in handy eventually!) but couldn't find the 2p coin. Perhaps taken by the lawncutter for the whole reservoir has recently been cut: wonderful grassy aroma filled the air. My third pillar of the day, all with open, unplugged caps. From here to the County Ground for a fabulous fiesta of football: Swindon Town 5-5 Sheffield United (aggregate 7-6) - now to find out whether there are any trigpoints in the Wembley area!

Parked at the top of the track (approx. SU076852), then walked up the track (in the SSW direction) until the gates to the reservoir compound. Following jonglew's log, I had intended to climb the left gate post, but found this to be impossible due to tree branches. So I elected to go under the gate instead. I'm 6 feet tall and weigh 92kg, I was JUST able to forcibly squeeze myself under the gate. My ribcage was so tightly wedged against the underside of the gate, I thought I was going to get stuck. Maybe it was just my big tummy! Trig was in very good condition on a square concrete base, centre cap missing, no plug, FB faces N, rear sight hole open (opposite side to the FB), all other sight holes closed. I left a 2p coin in the rear sight hole for the next visitor to find. Top tips: if you're any bigger than me, don't try going under the gate; don't wear your best clothing; fighting the natural instinct to panic while stuck under the gate is probably key to success! 9 out of 10 marks for the near death experience!

On my first visit I also viewed the trig from the compound fence, but this time determined to get a little closer. Easiest way was to park in the entrance to the reservoir off the minor road. A short walk along the access track to the reservoir gates, then up and over; the b/w at top was trickiest, but by climbing at the left-hand side where the gate is hinged to the post it was straight forward and I'm in late-50's so shouldn't present a problem to most of you whipper-snappers... The pillar sits on top of one of the reservoir humps and is in good condition. No views to speak of.

The pillar stands on a covered reservoir on a small hill to the north of Wootton Bassett. I walked to the reservoir compound on the partly over grown footpath from Hook Village Hall to the east. The trig can be clearly seen from the western edge of the compound and appears to be in good condition. A circuit of the perimeter fence did not reveal an easy way into the compound. It is surrounded by a tall fence and is bordered by nettly plantations and buttercup meadows. Low rolling farmland can be seen stretching into the distance to the west. A downland scarp rises above farmland in the distance to the south. Returning to the village hall the scarp slope can be seen continuing to the east and there is a view over Swindon to the north east.

Like everyone else, I got within 15 feet of the pillar but the reservoir complex was larger than I thought it would be and, as the football was looming and I had a cache or two to do aswell, didn't have time to venture to either of Glaslyn's suggested access points. The pillar is in good condition, with no visible paint.

There is a way in from 2 points though i didnt bother as you can get to 15 ft of pillar on mound outside fence. Cant see flush but able to verify condition. If you feel need to go in the gate has gap enough for two Falow deer to squeeze under so most will fit ,alternatiely to the rear SW corner the fence has gap below ,you will be inside compound for 100m and dont really see the point.(Having read other logs maybe the gap under gate is not viable but looked it !)
