Turned south off the A417 through the village of East Hendred. Head south for about three miles until reaching the top of the Ridgeway. Along path to west through trees , after about two hundred metres there is Scutchamer’s Knob on the south of the path. There is a metal gate and fence. No information board but it is some sort of burial mound. Fantastic name. Anyhow, the pillar is another twenty metres or so west and on the north side of the path on the edge of the trees. Cap missing. Excellent views to the north across Oxfordshire. On the way back to the car park disturbed local ‘wildlife’ disappearing into their camper van au naturel!

Very easy bag from the Ridgeway, did so without causing much delay to our group bike ride. Great views but no better or worse than you'll get on the rest of the Ridgeway.

---(2020-07-24, 14:31:00)--- SU 45570 85117 S5826 Today was Day 7 of my walk along the Ridgeway National Trail from Overton Hill to Ivinghoe Beacon, this time between the rare and well placed bench on the wonderfully named Rats Hill and the trig pillar at Fore Down. The walk was pleasant enough with good views though not for the first time on this trail I frequently complained to myself about the absence of seats and shade. We logged this trig in 2006 as "Unreachable but visible" on the wrong side of a barbed wire fence. That's still true today but the path is now so well trodden and the fence itself so invisible that I felt able to visit the trig. The views were much better today, too.

Easy to find on edge of field N of Ridgeway to W of Scutchamer Knob, though amongst scrubby nettles; broken barbed wire fence and gravelly ditch so not for the short trousered. For those who require it also has convenient car parking. Nice view N, view S not visible due to forestry strip but can be seen nearby from the Knob.

Cycled up byways from Chilton. This was the first TP that i tried to track down using only the app on my phone and its compass. I didnt look at the map at all. The TP is just off the Ridge Way so not too difficult to fine. Someone has put a blue rope on a branch of a tree near where the TP is. It is just in a field off the track by the edge of a fence. 5th and last TP of the day. Glad that i could just cycle down hill to Compton and the car. A good way to finish a days trig hunting!

8th, and best by far, of 9 new pillars on Durham to Dorset bike ride. Being just off the Ridgeway it is easy to locate and access, and has some nice views north.

We drove S from East Hendred, down the single track road and we parked at the end of the road (approx. SU458850). It was a short walk WNW along the Ridgeway and the trig was found a few metres on the N side of the treeline. I did some trimming of the overgrowth around the trig to tidy it up a bit. Trig was in very good condition, centre cap missing. But the surprise of the day was when I looked down the centre tube and saw 7 birds eggs down the centre tube! We didn't want the mother bird to see us and abandon her eggs, so we took our photos quickly and left. Walked around the nearby Scutchamer Knob, nothing of interest here except the history of what was here.

Easy access on the Ridgeway LDP. First trig of the day, sunrise still 22mins away so a near dark experience! Lovely views N, Didcot power station prominent (as it was in nearly all my trigs today). Pillar in good condition; cap missing, no plug;all sight holes open.

Walking the Ridgeway. Found this almost shyly hidden trig within some trees and undergrowth just a few yards off the ancient track. Here in its unobtrusive position, it looks over the valley towards the villages of East and West Hendred. On the opposite side of the Ridgeway is an early Iron Age round barrow which is the deliciously named Scutchamer Knob. I say 'round' guardedly, for that was its original shape but due to some past ruthless excavation it is now more of a 'croissant' shape as I recently heard it accurately described! This was a fine spot to rest awhile sheltered within the trees (very windy today) and partake of my wayfarer's fare.

Easy to miss if you're not looking out for it, set a few yards north of the Ridgeway path right on the field margin. Another one with a missing brass spider centre and no replacement plug - seems most of the Ridgeway trigs have been subjected to this treatment. Pillar is in good condition, not especially great location.

Visited whilst Geocaching along the Ridgeway, almost missed it as the nettles where doing their best to cover the pillar. The fence is quite low just to the west, making access straightforward.

Passed this one on a 2 hr 20 min whizz walk with Rebecca. Walked from near Harwell, west along the Ickneild Way, up onto the ridge and back. Behind a barbed wire fence and no time to find a way over. Overgrown so I couldn't see the flush bracket. Me and Rebecca

As I approached the trig I disturbed an owl which had perched on the trig. The FB faces south and is just about readable without needing to cross the barbed wire fence. Reasonable views north, and south from the nearby Scutchamer Knob. Be aware that the road up from East Hendred to the nearby car park is a pothole obstacle course in places.
