First time up here since the A3 was tunneled - noticed a plaque on the footpath informing us that the tunnel was 213' below us. The pillar is much as I remember it with the toposcope proclaiming that Southampton is only 33 miles away - surely it's farther than that? Loved the nearby information board with that photograph of the trilby-hatted O/S employee building the pillar at a cost of 3 guineas in 1936! Thoroughly enjoyed my return to this part of leafy Surrey.

Pleasant walk up to the trig, which is also a HuMP (Gibbet Hill). Large celtic cross monument near the trig. Pillar has been painted white and has a 'National Trust' plate fixed to it. Top of the pillar also has a plate fixed to it that acts as a direction finder, hence the 'slightly damaged' category. Very good views.

V interesting trig a) toposcope on top, apparently put there by the OS in 1962 b) maintained GPS trig so presumably still works despite the toposcope and c) on the adjacent display board there's a wonderful photo of it being built - chap pouring concrete in a trilby! Apart from an asphelt plug I'd say in very good nick. (ps if approaching from the Punchbowl cafe look out for the brass survey mushroom c 5in dia on the edge of the path about 2/3rds of the way up with Survey Point 547 engraved in it - we assume part of the tunnel construction)

I combined this visit with a visit to both viewing platforms (North and South) for the Hindhead tunnel. This place will be even nicer once that is finished and the Punchbowl becomes A road free.

Another camera on the floor photo.... the usual camera on the floor once again misses the lovely views that can be had from here. I even managed to miss the Celtic Cross from the photo - which is just a little way to the left as you look at the picture.©dpeberdy

Looking at the information board near this trig you can see that the centre plug was originally on this trig, but at some point it has gone missing and is now filled with tarmac. Personally we feel the NT plaque symbol on this is terrible, not very cosmetic added. In total there are three plaques on this trig. Nice to see an original photo and information about the trig, which is not the standard high we are used to. Good views across Surrey from here.
