From the National Trust car park in Hindhead head east along the old Portsmouth main road. Past the Sailor’s Stone on the left, the route is obvious to Gibbet Hill. The pillar has a National Trust name place on it and a direction finder on the top over the spider. Nearby is the Celtic Cross and a couple of information boards one of which includes a narrative about the triangulation pillar itself, extra points for that. Clear views to the east. Other directions are obscured by trees.

During the early 2000’s I would drive to Portsmouth from Richmond and back 2 or 3 times a week along the old A3, haven’t been this way since they started work on the tunnels. What an amazing transformation of the Punchbowl and the Common. Worth every single penny of the millions lavished on the project. Great views north and east from the TP, lovely walk from the car park and fabulous weather this evening as well. Close to perfect!

One of my favourite pillars to visit, this is easily accessed from the NT car park via a well-maintained and signposted trail, which takes in a few other landmarks along the way (such as the Celtic Cross and the benchmarked Sailor's Stone), whilst offering truly spectacular views across The Devil's Punchbowl. And the climb up Gibbet Hill to the pillar is a nice, gentle one. Pillar itself is white painted, with a toposcope instead of a spider, a NT sign on one face, and plaques on two others. It's a real joy to stay here and enjoy the view (and indeed, I was far from alone when I bagged this pillar).

Good condition but marked as damaged since it's probably not usable as a trig now (the spider being covered with a faux spider toposcope thing and the sightholes are encased in a concrete plinth so it can't be plumbed). That all said, superb views! Had a good walk around the Devil's Punchbowl on a beautiful crisp day. Benchmark can also be found on the Sailor's Stone. FB faces east-ish with no sightholes open. Cap is missing but there's an asphalt plug which someone has already started to crack open.

Looks like this has had a lick of paint since it was last photographed. The metal plates are untouched but the rest of it has been painted Brilliant White. Great views across the countryside and the nearby Celtic Cross is worth a visit, too.

Got away with parking free in the car park by the NT cafe, since the meter was out of order. Some nice views over towards the Surrey Hills, although the noise of traffic on the A3 ruins the ambience slightly. There's a cut BM on the gravestone-shaped murder memorial stone beside the track up to the trig, at about SU898358.

Managed to get the car within about 150 meters of this, up an un-made road that runs along side the A3. Interesting location, no views at my visit as thick fog. Pillar has been modified to be a NT information point, therefore, logged as slightly damaged - Well; not as the OS intended.

I'm not sure if the adorment of the pillar with extra plaques etc qualifies as 'damaged', so I'll leave the rating to others. It was a quiet and overcast day when I visited, so the views were almost non-existant. The nearby car park which appears on some OS maps is now closed. An old trackway passes nearby but is badly rutted in places.

Visited this site in the Autumn of 1954, when as a party of three Senior Scouts slept in front of Pillar, without tents. We left oan oblong tobbaco tin, containing a note(names & date} together with copper coins of the Realm. Cannot remember exact location, but tin probably has rusted away by now. More trees than then. View today not very good, would have been better on a sunnier day. Where National Trust Plaque has been attached ,signs of repair visible. Plug hole filled with concrete, top plate marked with with bearings and site lines to various other view points. 0

The pillar itself is covered in plaques, including a National Trust crest, a OS GPS plaque, nd to make matetrs worse, the top of it has been defiled by a viewfinder. Defintely worth a visit.
