From Inverarity Kirk and up a good track to the antenna where the pillar is visible around 200 yards away. From here the going is rough over felled trees and bracken. Pillar in good condition but around a third of it is covered in moss.

First TP of the day after meeting my daughter in Dundee for lunch. Parked at Inverarity church and dodged the cars ( not many) on the narrow road before turning onto the track. Pleasant surprise to see proper native bluebells rather than the spanish hybrids. Lots of tree fell around the TP making hard walking across brash ( regretted my shorts on this hot june day) to the TP which I found by going to the top of the watch tower. (No GPS for me).

Park at junction of road to South Bottomyre then just a case of following a forestry track and common sense to gain the mast then the watch tower can be easily seen. The trig is further east an well hidden by bracken so GPS will save time and energy.

Found this pillar quite easily within its winter setting: open cap, two sight holes open, & covered in green lichen. Amused to find further down the hill a folly/shelter/summerhouse to the south-east, dated 1803 above its pedimented doorway. Inside is a semi-circular bench and room, with above in the rafters an old crow's nest.

Second visit. For GPS reading and photographs. SITE VISIT: In woods. Approached from west. Parked just inside woods beside track at NO453448. Followed mapped track network to comms mast then east through woods until to locate trig. Pillar in good condition, partial moss coverage. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces SSW, ~201. Vented through NE sight hole. SW breaking open, innards blocked with debris. No view due to surrounding woods.

Trig pillar in good condition, but paintwork peeling. Spider retained original OS centre cap. Flush bracket faces southwest. Fothringham Hill is now entirely wooded. Visited and photographed 15/09/1998, GRP. By coincidence flush bracket S4581 is nearby but not on a trig pillar.
