Log #428. Very roundabout route to this one - parked at Frankie & Benny's and walked south along the main road until the underpass. Initially walked all the way back to the roundabout while looking for a suitable gap in the fence, but gave up and walked back to underpass. There is a easily hoppable bit just opposite the underpass, but there were enough lambs in the field that I wanted to try and avoid them if possible. Spalling to pillar and cap missing. Recommended route: park in housing estate directly west of the underpass, straight over the fence and follow the boundary all the way up to the pillar. Three fences to hop in total, all easy. Revisit for photographs and GPS reading. Parked in nearby suburban street in Ayr. Entered SW corner of field to south and headed north up west boundary to trig field. Pillar on southern edge of grazing field. Column in fair condition, some damage to top. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces NNW, ~346. Vented through southmost sight hole. 112 panorama spans from west to NNE and includes Holy Island and Goat Fell.

Slightly damaged pillar with networks of cracks around it plus some spalling near the FB. The top screed is also a bit dinged. Pillar sits to the north of the east/west hedge. Accessed via the bottom of the field to the south containing sheep (probably fed up with the sight of trigbaggers). FB faces north-ish with south-ish sighthole open only. Cap is missing and no plug. Good views to Brown Carrick, Goat Fell and to the general north considering the lack of altitude for the pillar. If crossing the A77, consider using the underpass about 200m to the south of the pillar!

Visited to record FB number. The pillar was completed 28th November 1947 costing 9.1s.3d. In 1950 this marker was computed for triangulation as tertiary station NS44/T22 in the Ayr & Kilmarnock secondary block. Flush bracket S4363 was levelled for height in 1970. This trig point was last maintained by the OS in May 1985. Trig pillar lucky not to be lost to road realignment. Feet absolutely soaked through just walking that short distance from the road. Ground was very boggy after lengthy wet spells at that time.
