Parked in Stoke Abbot and walked up a dramatic sunken lane, then a bluebell-filled footpath up to and around Chart Knolle, to find the pillar nicely sited in long grass and shaded by a few trees. Asphalt cap; one s/h open. Then back to Chart Knolle, and continued over to the County Top at Lewesdon Hill, returning to Stoke Abbot by a series of footpaths. A grand little tour of less than two hours.

this trigpoint has a commerative plate for a little boy called Oscar Gale who died after one day of being diagnosed with streptococcal meningitis just before his 4th birthday. Just some of the stories from the press regarding how the family has been raising awareness and money for charities: http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/5071756.Beaminster_mum_to_run_marathon_in_memory_of_son_Oscar/ http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/4093215.display/ http://www.henleystandard.co.uk/news/news.php?id=1527292 http://www.bridportnews.co.uk/news/localnews/10389790.Beaminster_father_cycles_to_Paris_in_memory_of_his_son/

The pillar stands on a grassy hill to the west of Beaminster. The site was visited on a circular walk from Beaminster. The base of the pillar is exposed by about six inches, it has FB S5890 and the spider has an asphalt plug. The trig has a fine view over this corner of Dorset. Beaminster is in the valley below to the east with Rampisham Down beyond. To the south Eggardon, Shipton and Hardown Hills were on view and a couple of parts of Lyme Bay could be seen beyond West Bay and Charmouth. The view to the west is hindered by the hill top copse but from close by there is a view of the grassy earthworks of the Roman Fort on nearby Wadden Hill with the wooded Lewesdon and Lamberts Hills in the distance. The Wessex Ridgeway Path to Stoke Knapp has good wide views over the surrounding countryside. The path down the small valley to Stoke Abbot and parts of the Jubilee Trail back to Beaminster were very pretty and were bordered with wild flowers. There is a surviving cut bench mark near the north-east corner of Beaminster church.
