Many thanks to the staff at Hazle Bank Shooting Ground for parking, permission to visit trig via their site, escorting me there and back during shooting and even offering a cup of tea. Very interested guide had never been to the trig before and enjoyed the wide ranging views today. Waist high grass up field boundary beyond shooting club fortunately dry today. Always worth asking.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 22nd January 1954 costing 16.7s.9d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SE38/T32 in 1955. Levelled for height in 1972. Last maintained by the OS in September 1986. SITE VISIT: Approached from south. Parked NW side of Hazel Bank at SE360595 beside gateway. Many thanks to Carol and Charles for grid ref of parking. Made my visit so much simpler. I didn't bother going into firing range but opted to go up via edge of field to left. Absolutely no problems, and even a style beside the trig. Thanks also to Charles for the localised gardening. It was nice not to have to do here what I had been doing to many others in the area over the past three days. Now for my geek story. This FB number follows on from a run of twenty in the Scottish Borders! SITE VISIT: Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces WSW, -254. Vented through NE sight hole. Southerly outlook over field where not blocked by adjacent boundary hedges.

You'd never know it unless you were trying to put a frame round the top to make an art plaster cast, but this trig is significantly bigger than all others I've tried to cast ie approx 20mm both ways. Puzzled by some of the furtive visits in the past and talk of GOML reactions. No need to go through any clay pigeon range at all and I had a trouble free visit middle of a Thursday morning. Unsure where to approach it from south A road, having driven just beyond the top of hill and seen 'trespassers will be prosecuted' signs, I decided to go back and on to the Farnham road to the west and drive up to the farm and ask permission for a visit for my art trig top project. Found big steel mechanical gates at entrance to Gibbet hill farm. So googled it on my phone, found holiday cotts website and rang the owner on his mobile to ask permission to visit and he said if he'd been there he'd've opened the gates for me but told me just where to pull off the road into an open gateway on the south road, so drove back there and just before the brow of the hill I pulled my car in there SE36002 59501, parked on the field and an easy hoof across two fields to the top right corner. Took my kit to make a plaster cast of the top so I can make some ceramic art sculptural pieces from it. Had to give it quite a hawthorn haircut with my secateurs first. Noticed that the corner most into the hedge has a loose chunk with the concrete still there and in place. If I'd had a tube of UHU in my car I'd've cleaned it off and re-glued it!! In terms of number geekiness. This FB trig number is the 18th Birthday trig of my pal in York, John Cossham!

Extra points for this one - nothing to do with the trig itself, just the unusual approach through the clay-pigeon range to the SE. Dodge the orange clay chips on the ground, squeeze through the hedge on the left of the range, walk up the next field edge and turn left at the top. Trig lies in the hedge at the next field corner and gate. Slightly trespassy, and therefore with a bit of an 'edge' to it.
