Tried a number of ways to get into the field, but no access today due to slippery slopes, barbed wire and an electric fence! Will return when it’s dryer under foot and I don’t run the risk of impaling myself if I slip!

Plan A was using OS Explorer OL3, walk along footpath to west of Waltham Chase in hope of seeing pillar from there about 50 metres to south. South side of path thick with vegetation and awkward steep bank with fence. Found a place to squeeze through but couldn’t see pillar. Didn’t fancy negotiating the several horse paddocks to get across the field. Returned to the path and walked further west, down hill a little then over a wonky stile and followed the field perimeter south. Again, no easy place to get into field. At the crest of ground hedge was very thick but peering through could just make out the pillar about five metres away but no clear view even for a picture. Opted for plan B, checking on here, seemed access would be permitted from Ash House Farm if I asked Ann. Back along the overgrown footpath and around to the farm where there were a couple of people. Requested permission to walk up to pillar to take a photograph. Declined. Asked for Ann, told she lived opposite but wasn’t there. Reverted to plan A. Back around path and a more determined but stealthy effort to view pillar. No easy spot to negotiate prickly hawthorn hedge and barbed wire fence. Pillar has been whitewashed fairly recently. Grassy but not too long to get pictures. Kept low. View from pillar ok to east. Didn’t hang about. Footnote, incredible how this spot has been engulfed by the hedge over the years from looking at earlier photographs.

No-one around at Ash House Farm and waited a while then Ann came out. I asked politely if I could visit but she replied 'We let no-one up there'. Not to be put off I explained that I only wanted a quick photo so she rang her sister who looks after the Pillar and she agreed it was OK. She did not escort me but just follow the track up the hill and enter the top field on your right and it is near a large tree.

Asked at Ash Barn, young lass called out to Ann, the owner, who was in the yard, she was more than happy to escort me to the pillar which is protected behind a fence and is painted white, unable to get a GR but FB visible. Ann told me that her sister paints it and looks after it. Well done her.

Approaching from the east I was sure that the trig had been removed. My feet were soundly stung by nettles, but by approaching the highpoint of the hill from an unfenced field it was there. Freshly painted white, but just over a barbed wire fence (and the horsey folk were in it's field). This trig is accompanied by (I presume) pets graves - the second I've seen which has doubled as a headstone. Distant views to Fawley oil refinery on the Solent.

Writing this in Aug 2018. Just dug out an old map and found notes on a few trigs I did in 1998. I remember this trip well, on NY Day as part of a resolution to do more trigging, I got up early and drove around a circuit of six North of Portsmouth. This was the fifth, and my notes say, "Feet are sodden now! Nice views from here. Also grave 'RIP Trigger 27/4/95'...of dog?"
