A beautiful crisp and frosty morning. Adder country, but none seen today - they’re probably hibernating! I parked in a layby on the B3293 near the entrance to the footpath. From here it was a pleasant walk round the perimeter of the Goonhilly Earth Station across frosty ground, through trees and past the Dry Tree standing stone. The pillar sits on a small mound just off the main path, surrounded by bracken and gorse and overlooking the earth station to the north and the downs to the W/SW. There are trees obscuring the view to the NE, E and SE. Plug missing, FB faces NNE directly towards standing stone, WNW sighthole open, all others apparently plugged. Caught a glimpse of the 'dummy pillar' inside the Goonhilly site on my way back to the car. Very disappointed to see that the Goonhilly Visitor Centre is now CLOSED and has been since March 2010 - the Earth Station is a hugely important part of the history of international telecommunications although it is no longer in active service. I had visited in August 2001 (aged 17) and had my photo taken with ET!

I have bagged the SW 725311 one in May last year and I don't recall the concrete plinth, or the rather close telescope. So looked here at the other photos and find iainmac has found this one as well. My photo doesn't exactly look like a dummy/fake although holes appear oversize and higher than normal - back in 1968 there wasn't a visitor centre or any educational establishment Are there actually two trigs here? Why build a dummy one?

As Alan Grove above states, the trigpoint is adjacent to a path just passed the Dry Tree menhir (standing stone). The path is easy to find from the Nature Reserve car park - head for the Goonhilly Earth Station fence and follow the path around it (away from the road)...past the wind turbine, and you'll see it on top of a mound on the left side of the path just past the standing stone. The trigpoint is set on top of Dry Tree barrow, an Early Bronze Age burial mound, reputedly (I haven't checked) the highest point on Goonhilly Downs, and historically the meeting point of five parishes. Your users will be pleased to hear that the barrow has just been cleared of gorse and scrub by Lizard Ancient Sites Network, so it is now more accessible than ever! Great on a sunny day.

This one is located ajacent to a footpath just outside the boundry of the BT Goodhilly Earth Station. The nearest safe parking place is for the nature reserve about 500 metres away. The problem for me was finding a way from the nature reserve to the footpath. The area consists of nature reserve, access land, permissive paths and public rights of way. To complicate matters, the area also contains the remnants of RAF Dry Tree, a WW2 radar installation. Eventually I found the footpath and quickly discovered the overgron patch in which TP3407 sits. Luckily at this time of the year it was easy to find a way through. The pillar is in good condition apart from a missing plug. It is kept company by a modern concrete post. A short distance away is an acient standing stone known as the Dry Tree, from which the RAF station took its name.
