Look R for some wooden steps leading up to the pillar. Views NW good. Condition good OS plug intact, plaque on side. A really peaceful spot to find complete with trig pillar, and easy access. Great.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 5th June 1939 costing 3.9s.9d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SE38/T33 in 1955. Levelled for height in 1971. Last maintained by the OS in March 1975. SITE VISIT: Overall approach from north. Parked north side of Thorny Hill lane at SE417633. Walked east along road then south into woods via RoW and following woodland footpaths thereafter. This is my first new S2xxx FB series trig pillar since 1987, yes 26 years ago, despite my 2000+ tally. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains replacement OS centre cap with raised large wide letters. Flush bracket faces SSE, ~155. All four horizontal sighting holes open, innards blocked with debris. Views very limited by surrounding woods but for occasion limited gaps with long range skyline.

utterly wonderful location, painted white, but not as pristinely white as my first visit 14 years back. Regally on top of a steep little bit of hill, north of big white water tower. Arrived just before sunset complete with my kit for taking a plaster cast of the top of the pillar. Packed my wooden frame with clay round the edges and I was ready to mix and pour the 'plaster of paris'just about gorgeous sunset time. left it to dry and cure while I went off to seek out the full moonrise in the opposite direction front the reservoir fence hundred metres to the south. No luck there, blanket cloud in eastern sky. Shame. But great to get my third trig pillar top cast so I can now make slip cast clay sculpture panels from it. It's come out with excellent definition on the central 'Ordnance Survey triangulation station' central ring. For the number nerdy who like birthdate links to flush bracket numbers, this is David Beckham's birthdate trig pillar!! What could be nerdier than that info???!!!When I was first here, ironically it was also almost at sunset 4.40pm Sunday 7th Feb 1999 with a gorgeous dalmation dog called Jasper whose white with black spots looked very stylish juxtaposed against the trig and white water tower.
