If ever a trig could look sad, this is one of them. Aw bless! Short circular walk was just right for the time of year. Maybe I'll go back with a pot of white paint.

Short walk from minor road to N, across steep rough horse paddock. Horses galloped up to see what I was up to. Trig, located at or near summit of Pen Coed Di-haul hill, partially buried in hedgerow, copious nettles etc cleared to access it. Pillar has no cap, residue of asphalt plug present; rear sight hole only open. Views N to Blk Mts.

Short walk to the pillar through the horse field from the lane which marks the boundary between Torfaen and Monmouthshire. Off now to catch a train back home and warm up at last. Brrr brrr, shiver shiver! Reading other people’s logs it seems like I picked the easiest way for once. All I needed to do was the climb the fence beside the rickety gate (SO 318015) and then walk unimpeded straight to the pillar.

I'm not sure if it was a sense of achievement in reaching this, or the insanity of interupting a pleasant pedal to tackle the assault course in pursuit of this hobby! Well signed ROW but waded through knee high soaking wet grass. A greasy track to an area needing a traverse clinging to the wire fence to avoid a morass and a firm ground hopscotch. Footpath between hedges pushing through knee high ferns and stepping over trailing brambles to point where totally blocked by outgrown hedge. Back-track and up field, duck through barbed wire fence, through wood, another duck through a barbed wire fence, and i'd arrived!

The pillar stands next to the fence of a field grazed by horses and sheep on a small hill to the northeast of Pontypool. The trig was reached by means of field paths and quiet lanes from Glascoed to the east. A footpath passes through the field within 40 metres of the trig. The foundations are exposed by several inches in places; it has some remains of a broken asphalt plug and it has FB S6971. From the pillar the gentle hills of Monmouthshire can be seen to the east and some of the harsher ridges and peaks of Glamorganshire to the west. The adjacent small copse blocks out the view southwards but a short walk down the overgrown path reveals the rest of the trig’s panorama.

Suffering an identity crisis at the moment as I found it hiding under a horse blanket. In good shape overall but the plug is missing and site holes blocked. Access is OK from the SE but the path now lies to the East of the farm and cuts round the back of it. Paths overgrown and rarely trod, possibly a better walk from the north.
