Nice stone-built mossy pillar with a shelter cairn built against one face rendering it useless as a triangulation point, but otherwise all in tact. Parked next to the cattle grid above Butter Tubs pass at 1725 ft this is a good place to start if you do not fancy the long slog up from Hawes or Thwaite, the path is a bit vague but following the fence over Hood Rigg and little Shunner soon brought me to the top I did use the compass as low cloud meant poor visibility but on a fine day this route would be quite easy, The Trig has been incorporated into the well made shelter and this has been so well done that its not easy to spot the Trig at first glance especially from the west, no views or fellow walkers today due to the poor weather.

If approaching from the south along the Pennine Way the trig is at the end of the north arm of the + shaped shelter. A gem of a hike, I loved every minute of the day as the visibility ranged from extensive to less that 10 metres in the space of half an hour, which is how it was as I arrived on the crest of the fell en-route to the trig and on most of the return to Garsdale railway station - where I started from - quite lengthy but very enjoyable - never saw another soul - absolute bliss!!
