From Byerhope Bridge, with Alan Caine - a vicious westerly wind blowing. Took tracks most of the way, just final 100m over the heather. Pillar has no cap/plug; RHS sight hole open. Top badly damaged. 360deg panorama.

Easy track up from Byerhope Bridge. Damage to top; spider exposed but intact. Plug missing, one sighting hole open. Cemented cracks on pillar face. Cloudy in Hexham but quickly brightened up.

Parked up on free parking at the boundary side and walked up the steep but good track almost to the trig.Great far sunny views from here today trig is ok.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 16th September 1951 costing 22.9s.6d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NY86/T27 in 1953. Levelled for height in 1955. Last maintained by the OS in July 1984. SITE VISIT: Parked on widened tarmac, west side of B6295 north of junction with unclassified road at NY852477. Followed mapped right of way network opposite (eastwards) which initally climbs steeply to meet another track that continues and passes within 100m of the trig. Flattish grazing top on open access land. Pillar in fair condition, damage to top. Spider centre open. Flush bracket faces 197 SSW. Vented through SE sight hole. 360 open skyline with views to similar surrounding hills and longer views to the north.

Centre gone. Top now losing chunks. Much cracking and leaching on main body of pillar.

Damaged Pillar No centre plug. Big chunks of top screed gone. Three corners lost. Body of pillar crazed as water has intruded and leached the lime content(?)

Retrurned to get photos and complete the previous planned route. Better weather today but still showers around. Ascended from Spartylea on bridleway to get this one. Onto Harwood Side and Watsons Pike from here.

Trig flaking badly on the top and cracks appearing on the body, although there is evidence of repairs. Nice views.

Continued over to the trig point after doing Walker Dan's cache. A pleasant walk but the haze took the edge off the views. The T/P has some frost damage on the top but all the metalwork is in situ.

A brisk uphill walk in the sticky heat, fortunately a bit air up here. As we sat near the trig point, the local gamekeeper drove by in his landrover and watched to make sure we weren't up to no good. Put a cache out with Pickachu travel bug after he had gone. Continued our walk around the moors.
