Climbed the route as described below from the phone box at Castle Nook and up over Great Heaplaw and Black Hill, a fairly strenuous yomp over rough moorland. By the time we reached the grouse butts across Black Hill my calf muscles were popping like crazy, and by the time we'd got to the top it felt like we'd climbed a proper hillwalker's hill. However, for anyone not wishing to submit themselves to a two hour schlepp I'd suggest a better route of ascent would be the route we descended the hill by. An alternative start point is the landrover track about 500m north of the phonebox, by some riding stables at Kirkhaugh. Car parking here is admittedly scarse, though quite possible to park at the phone box and walk up to this point. After about 300m along the track an obvious ATV track leads round the northern edge of Great Heaplaw and then almost to the top of the hill. The third highest point in the county of Northumberland, it provides a glorious 360 panorama of the North Pennines, and whichever route of ascent you choose, keep it for a clear day because your efforts will be amply rewarded!
