Not easy to find if you park in Grinshill and take the wrong unofficial byway. The best would to drive up the rough track from the west by Clive church but the virtual walked circumnavigation of the ridge back to Clive, then up to the buildings on the ridge was impressive enough despite the heavy rain. Head ESE up the well worn track from the drivable track to the red warning beacon to find the matching square topped pillars of the trig and toposcope. There must be phenomenal views off the edge towards Shrewsbury to the SSW. The descent down through the woods in a easterly then southerly direction off the rough track, via the Staffordshire Way, into Grinshill was interesting as was the sandstones in the rock exposures. See my Webscott entry for the uses of the sandstones - quarries at Myddle are now re-opened for stone to be used in restoration of existing buildings.

An interesting one this. Its a very stout slightly outward tapering pillar built of the local sandstone. In shape its rather like those squat pillars around Lossiemouth (Bin of Cullen, Brown Muir etc). The plate is a "BsM" type and well polished by the many visitors to this popular spot. Between the pillar and a similar shaped toposcope there is an aircraft beacon from RAF Shawbury, like a red poker tip. On a clear day you can see very good views of Shrewsbury and south to the hills. The pillar is OK except for a broken plastic plug replacement and all the hooks have been cut. A lovely spot, above crags with some reasonable climbing.
