Perfect for an evening stroll 10 years ago. This time the pillar was a perfect objective for a post Christmas ramble with the dog. The best bit was the number of young kids with their wellies on, having a family scramble up to the top. The next generation of trig baggers? I also liked seeing the Luing cattle, albeit looking a bit bedraggled after all the recent wet weather. The pillar's condition is a bit precarious but probably no worse than Dave P's picture of it last April

A swift dash up the fell was almost halted by a traffic jam of rarebreed cattle, mud, gale force winds and thrashing rain. I passed a drenched couple sheltering under a tree on the last 100 metres, and then struggled to actually stand to touch the trig, much less take any decent pics. No views whatsoever; I quickly said hello to the damaged stonebuilt pillar (missing a good chunk next to a vulnerable-looking flush bracket) and fairly sprinted back down the hill.

Birch Fell top was a pig to navigate to due to extensive tree damage from recent storms. Gummers Howe is about to lose its flush bracket (if not patched up soon), but retains fantastic views overlooking Windermere. The dozen or more people swimming in their skins this morning are dedicated this pillar. Brrrr it was cold and they just frolicked about without a care in the world, admittingly they had a fair bit of "timber" on them.
