Took the B2145 South from the Chichester direction, then turned left into Rectory Lane. There's a staggered crossroads about 200 metres before St Wilfred's Church where you'll find a little lane and walking track heading North. Follow this lane past a 'Pagham House Only' sign and you'll find the field containing the Trig on the left after you go through a wooden gate. The field was full of lettuce when I visited, but it was easy enough to follow tram lines right up to the pillar. Luckily the handful of farm workers present were in an adjacent lettuce field. The pillar is definitely sinking, and was only as high as my hips.

Had I been a week later the seeds for the proposed crop of herbs would have been sown and my request would have been denied. Had a long chat with the tractor driver who originated from Dunbar in Scotland. Apparently the ploughing, harrowing, planting, weeding and harvesting is all programmed by means of sat nav technology so that the tractor follows the exact same route on each passing. In fact programmed to miss the pillar! Apart from a few cracks the pillar is in reasonable condition and has one of the 'Monument/GPS' plaques attached to it. This pillar is located in a field approximately 150 feet from the hedgerow. There are crops growing so I asked at the farmhouse if I might follow the tractor lines through the crops up to the pillar. They said that they would rather I didn’t as the field had just been sprayed with herbicide but they wouldn’t mind me walking up the edge of the field on the ‘wrong’ side of the hedge to get as close as I could. In deference to their wishes, I did exactly that. The pillar looks to be in good condition apart from a chip out of one edge… probably clouted by a farm implement. It carries the usual OS plate that is common to all pillars that are now designated as ‘Passive Stations’.
