This makes for an interesting 6 mile circular walk including Cowpe Lowe trig. In spite of zero visibility at the summit and needing to take a compass bearing just to navigate the last part, the views lower down were good and the paths were well marked for most of the way.

Walked up paths from end of public road in Cowpe. This was visited before the Marilyn summit and then the trig pillar at Cowpe Lowe. Great circular route. Be aware that not all footpaths marked on the map can be found on the west side of Cowpe.

This one looked from a distance to have 2 pillars. As I got closer I realised that one was a memorial pillar. My Visit was interrupted by morons on motorbikes. :(

Parked on Cowpe Road and then followed the footpath through farm (very messy), struggled to follow footpath from here and it was getting very hot and I was getting very bothered! Eventually found our way onto Rooley Moor Road and then followed this bagging a few benchmarks on the way.

Walked up from the top of Cowpe Lane where there was plenty of parking near the new housing development. Route took us past loads of old cars, tractors etc but soon out on the moor tracks. Kept to the track longer on the way back which was better.

Walked up from Boarsgreave. Pillar has minor chipping to top edges. Asphalt plug replaces lost top cap; all sight holes open. Panoramic views, E better. Cut arrow in nearby rock is more likely the old trig as no benchmark shown here on any maps (other than the pillar FB). On to the Hailstorm hill tops and Cowpe Lowe pillar on very wet ground.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 24th May 1948 costing £17.0s.5d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station SE02/T15 during 1948. Levelled for height to Class 1 precision at tertiary standards in 1956. Last maintained by the OS in October 1979. SITE VISIT: Approached from southwest. Parked SW side of Edenfield Road (A680) at SD830159. Up via Knowl Moor, continuing main via the mapped windfarm tracks to SD845189. From there a feint path leads all the way to the trig. Top of Leach. Open moor mapped as access land. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre plugged with asphalt. Flush bracket faces northeast, compass measurement 51°. All sight holes open, innards part blocked with debris. Full 360° panoramic view. Continued to Hunger Hill.

From Waterfoot followed PBW firstly to Cowpe Lowe Trig then to the Junction with the Rooley Moor Road, then cut acroos to the Trig , which is situated on a Moorland top close to a small wind shelter and a Topograph which is missing its top.there is a bench mark close to the trig The Trig is in good condition , the Cap is filled all sight holes are open and the Flush Bracket faces 33`,the views were obscured by mist . Return by the Rooley Moor Road

Asphalt plug. Public. Access Land. From Catley Lane Head, follow the Pennine Bridleway for approx. 3 miles. Trig then up to left on modest hill [Top of Leach] overlooking Cowpe Reservoir. Summit sadly littered.

12 mile circular trigbagging walk taking in Hunger Hill, Knowl Hill, Cowpe Lowe and Top of Leach (Hailstorm Ridge) trigs. Until we got here we didn't realise the moor had got a horrible wind farm built all over it!

Out with my walking group - The Irregulars, LDWA - and our route took us directly to this pillar after a steady ascent from Britannia. Pillar on open access land so no problem reaching it and sits amongst various other 'constructions' Everything in good order although it has lost its original plug. In an area of a lot of industrial quarrying history and has extensive views from this elevated location.

Walked up track from Boarsgreave easy paths to trig.This one is a maralyn as well,lots of cairns on top inlcuding damaged toposcope and wind shelter very clear sunny today but bitter cold wind. Trig in vgc ashpalt plug sighting holes all open very good long range views today.

Theres all sorts of masonry here, and great views. My first visit here was on 16th Sept 1984 in the Rossendale Fell Race.

from Rooley moor road end,lovely walk taking in the trigpoint,Rochdale ua top and the Marilyn, big wind farm on top and good views,several cars parked on top on road made I assume to build wind farm.the Marilyn is west of the trigpoint though to be fair you could make a case for nearly anywhere on the top.

Top of Leach. Good views down Rossendale Valley and a nice ride round the other side of the hill. Shame about the bike catastrophe that happened later.

Correct name really is Top of Leach. See six inch OS map. The top of Hailstorm Hill is about 1/2km west marked on 6" map at "BS". The very large boundary stone is still there but lies flat. There was a very old cut benchmark stone nearby. I managed to re-erect it a few years ago, but off-road vandals have now smashed it into three chunks. Repairable, but the stupid beggars will only smash it again !

The trig on the infamous indeterminate summitted marilyn Hailstone Hill. This is not the summit, thats a km to the west and anyones guess as to which tussock is the highest. The trig is near an amazing stone road leading to some quarries. Very good views of Manchester.
