Another good cycle up a hill to get to this one. Had to lift bike over a couple of gates but easy enough to get to. Group of women as me to take a picture of them with the windmill in the background, but without the cherry picker. They were quite impressed that i had cycled up to it and also asked me if it was OK to walk around the windmill. I think they thought I might own it?? I said I didnt.

This is a wonderful hill-top site. Shame that the mill is fenced off for 'safety reasons' - a local woman told me that it was closed to the public because someone had camped up here and lit a fire. A splendid building such as this should surely not be spoiled by ugly fencing and warning notices. Nearby are the remains of four High Frequency Direction Finding stations or 'Huff-Duffs' from WW II as explained to me by an enthusiast who was up here taking photographs of them. They used to contain three-storey wooden towers and the RAF personnel had a method of determining the position of aircraft. And the pillar? Tucked away in a nearby hedge; no change since recent reports.

Parked at end of Mill Lane (part of Roman Road Stane Street) on A285 in Halnaker, approx 1.2km from tig. Pillar is buried in hedgerow 20m or so S of the windmill. Cleared some vegetation. Other than missing cap (and no plug), pillar is in good condition; 1 sight hole open. 360deg views to IoW and south coast, Chichester cathedral prominent. Windmill is a tower mill with beehive cap dating back to around 1740's with an earlier structure on the site mentioned in 1540 as belonging to manor of 'Halfnaked'. Restored in 1934, 1954 and 2004, it is currently fenced off as being 'dangerous'. There are octagonal structures dating from WWII close by, some debate as to their purpose but they are probably not blockhouses as previous loggers have stated but most likely HFDF sites.

I parked in the lay-by near Warehead Hopuse to the south-west and walked up Mill Lane (track) and then path to the windmill. The pillar is close by in the hedge. As for being slightly damagerd I have seen good ones worse than this! However, the plug is missing and as a result the pillar is open to the elements. A lovely location with the nearby windmill.

Parked next to the footpath sign at Warehead Farm entrance. IT says 20 minutes to the mill, but you would have to walk fairly slow to take that long. The windmill itself is in a great position with wonderful views all round. The Mill looks in good condition since its renovation. A shame some idiots feel that plaques are for covering in graffiti. Tere are some strange octagonal structures around here too - not sure what they are for. Me 127m
