Parked in the layby with the post box and took the bridleway through the wood, then yomped up the steep field edges to the summit and the trig. Had a lovely chat with a lost cyclist near the top before the final, gentler stretch across the last field. Trig is in fine condition, and enjoys superb views in all directions - I think it's impossible to take bad photos up here. Easily the highlight of the day.

Visited during a walk that included Hod Hill. The pillar is sited at the crossing of two bridleways within a Neolithic Camp. Its foundations are exposed by about a foot all round; it has a rough asphalt plug and FB S5901. Brilliant hilltop with massive views: the western edge of Cranborne Chase from Down End Farm to Melbury Hill; a wide expanse of the Blackmore Vale; Duncliffe Hill; a hazy Alfred’s Tower in the distance; Okeford Hill lies to the southwest with the various hills of the Dorset Ridgeway stretching into the distance; Hod Hill lies close by to the southeast and numerous other hills and ridges disappear into the haze. The Neolithic earthworks were barely noticeable but the Iron Age Fort at the north of the hill and the Iron Age and Roman earthworks on Hod Hill are phenomenal. A large portion of the hilltop is a NNR and a SSSI.
