On a Dearne Valley Walking Group hike with Steve Pennock. Starting from the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre, just over nine miles hiked with great views over the Vale towards Thirsk and beyond. As we returned via the Cleveland Way, Steve and I took a short detour over the scrubland and the gallops. The pillar sits atop a small hill where the nettles were in full force. The views from the pillar are quite ordinary. The pillar appears to be in generally good condition but the surface skin is cracking and breaking away in places. The centre of the spider has been replaced with concrete or similar.

I waited until a Sunday evening before attempting this one, figuring no one would be about either on the gallops or the farmland. I followed the footpath from Dialstone Farm, and went all the way to the bottom of the gallops before hopping the broken wall and following the grass racetrack round and beyond the extent of the access land, again trying to be discreet. The pillar came into view sat atop its grassy, overgrown tumulus, and it was the work of a moment to nip over the gate and up to the pillar. You are visible from the farm buildings when on the tumulus, so my stay was very brief. I returned the same way and carried on my walk along to Sneck Yate.
