Very pricey parking, but worth the climb as stunning views along the coast each way. One of the first really sunny saturdays of the year, so the area was packed with visitors going to Durdle Door nearby.

Parked at Lulworth Cove for 5.00 for 4 hours then had a look around then up Hambury Tout, then along the coast via Durdle Door, Swyre Head, The Warrens before going directly uphill to the Admiralty Navigation Beacon and finally Chaldon Hill before returning by the inland route.

The pillar sits just below a bell barrow which was excavated in 1790 revealing a crouched skeleton with a possible food vessel on its chest. All serene up here today with just the cows quietly cropping the grass nearby. Pillar has open cap, & two sight-holes open. Beautifully sited with a superb seascape; landscape not bad either.

NW side of tumulus, small chip out of one edge. Calm and warm in hazy sunshine. A night anchored in Lulworth cove while moving boat to her new home in Plymouth.

Bit the bullet and paid my 3 for 2 hrs parking at Newlands Farm, time for this and Chaldon Down trigs. Sited just N of the barrow at top of the hill, some stunning sea and landscapes. Pillar has cap missing and residue of an asphalt plug; front and rear sight holes open, but internal blockage prevents any sight of the bolt. Exposed foundations and small chunk missing from one top corner.

Easy walk up grassy slope from Durdle Door car park. Views from the pillar were a bit disappointing as it is sighted on the landward side of the tumulus. However there are great views to be had from atop the tumulus. Cap and tarmac replacement are both missing. Pillar has a couple of small chunks out of it (see images). FB faces North.

I first came here as a boy in the 70's on a family holiday - great place with amazing views - walked from Lulworth over to Chaldon along coast path - great walk. Pillar good condition located next to Tumuli.

Short but steep walk from Lulworth Cove to this Trig and it's views across part of Dorset's most popular coastline. I wonder why the Trig wasn't located on the very summit? Ordnance Survey website lists the computing year as 1950 and the height a/s/l as 134.678 metres (441.86 feet).

Lovely spot; apart from the car parking fee (2.50/2 hrs), the groccles, and the wind & rain. Anyway, nice easy bag. Was it just me or did I detect a trig shaped hole on the top of the tumulus ?? (See ~bob~s comments too)

Great walk from Durdle Door to Lulworth. Sadly you cannot see the sea as the trig is in the lee of a small mound. The inquisitive cows were a bonus. Slight damage on the post and the top has gone.

Climbed up from West Lulworth (no extortinate car park fees). Views extensive along coast also towards trigpoint Chaldon Down and former site Burngate resr. Plug missing, had been asphalt filled but mostly now removed.

Great views in all directions if you ignore the caravan park, which is a bit of an eyesore. I'm surprised nobody else has commented on this, but it looked to me like this one used to be on top of the mound, but has been reseated lower down at some point, possibly to stop it blowing over in the wind? :) Evidence: a) the big lump of concrete round the base (see Frenziedfrog's photo); b) a hole about the same size on top of the mound.

Trigpoint found after a steep walk from West Lulworth. Pillar has good views even though some of the coast is obscured by a mound behind it. Trigpoint in generally good condition but cap is missing.

Been to find the two Durdle Door caches then plodded up the hill to the pillar. No plug and no paint. Concrete base exposed 12" all round. N-S sightholes open. Views inland [seamist and hill restricts seaward views]. In area of public access lane which takes me back to the 1970's when I used to come here every year leading 6th-form Geography fieldcourse parties - nice to see some of then around today aswell!!

This TP doesn't stand on the highest point because that is a tumulus. As a result, it is hidden to the walkers on the well-used path from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door. The parking charge others have referred to isn't bad when you consider that the same ticket can be used at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door car parks.

Hambury Tout offers excellent views to the disappointing tourist trap that is Lulworth Cove. If you're planning to visit it, don't bother. We parked at the extortionate Durdle Door car park (4 for 2 hours or something) and enjoyed the stunning scenery and beaches at Durdle Door.

Isoceles seemed a bit 'down' on the location. I don't think that you should be deterred by a car park fee - 4 is about 3/4 pints in a pub (depending). I do like his photo of the cow headbutting the trig though. Visit out of season and revel in the outstanding scenery. Trig is right next to a tumulus.

I'm writing this in Aug 2018 having just dug out some old maps and found notes on a few trigs I did 20+ years ago before I even realised this site existed! Map notes say "Walked up at sunset & watched it go down magnificently. Beautiful views of L Cove, the Dorset coastline and inland."
