Bit tricky getting through Bath from the south east. Then about four miles north west of the city along Lansdown Road, past the racecourse. There was a small car park on the west side of the road by a driveway, but didn’t lead to the mast which was what I expected. About two hundred metres further on was another turning onto a lane noted as for the fire service. Pulled over by gate where there was a van already parked. Probably a bit cheeky. Then headed west past the mast, through a gate and along the path for about four hundred metres. Still dark, headed for clump of trees visible on the skyline. Spotted pillar after reaching a metal gate. Straightforward. Views to north and west towards Bristol. Spider and cap in place. Would have scored more if it had been daylight. Information board nearby about the Battle of Lansdown 1643. There was someone camping in a one man tent in the field about fifty metres from the pillar. Said good morning. Probably wondered what I was doing. I thought the same. Residual frost on the ground from last couple of days.

Site of the Battle of Lansdown. The First English Civil War battle of Lansdowne (or Lansdown) was fought on 5 July 1643, near Bath, Somerset, southwest England. Although the Royalists under Lord Hopton forced the Parliamentarians under Sir William Waller to retreat from their hilltop position, they suffered so many casualties themselves and were left so disordered and short of ammunition that an injured Hopton was forced to retire.

In Bath for the weekend so decided to walk the last section of the Cotswold Way - despite pouring rain. Started at Greville Monument and came to this trig fairly quickly. Clear of vegetation at this time of year, in good condition, but completely cloudy so no views.
