18th April should be known as 'National Trig Point Day' after events on this date in 1936 at Cold Ashby...Set of to bag a pillar high on my to do list with some interesting geographical features for added interest. Parked to the E and up the hillside to a gate at the summit of the hill leading to the pillar, returned via the fascinating Coldberry Gutter. Decent views on a cold, grey and blustery day, just over an hour of my day very well spent.

Nearing the end of my 2nd day and no time to explore Coldberry Gutter and the mines. This area and the walk back into M -i-T via Hudeshope Beck was perhaps the most interesting part of the 25 mile route and last trig was spectacular overlooking Teesdale 5/5. The coalman seen this morning (minus donkey jacket) is gifted today's quarry. No time for pleasantries, but a nod sufficed.

Fossils,hushes,mine workings and all sorts of interesting stones make this a smashing trig point to visit. A privileged location overlooking Teesdale.

Approached from E - good parking next to Hudeshope Beck. Quite interesting topography - old tips etc & the amazing gutter. Views were a bit limited today - distant hills in mist.

Easy ascent alongside wall from mines access road, fell ponies grazing near summit two gates allow access to the Trig, came down the impressive Coldberry Gutter then spent some time exploring the mining area, a good little walk with plenty of interest.

It was a long dull plod down from westernhope moor. No paths, Views good from here though, up and down teesdale. Not an area I visit often

From Westernhope. Dull plod until descending from James Hill. No fence to follow, no path. Probably best to take a compass in poor weather. No problems today and mostly dry underfoot.

HISTORY: Pillar completed 11th June 1960, cost not on record. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NY71/T5 in 1962. Levelled for height also in 1962. Last maintained by the OS in June 1983. SITE VISIT: Approached from WNW. Parked in roadside recess by Moor House at NY912297. Followed RoW network via Red Grooves House to west end of Coldberry gutter and continued east to junction of fences just north of summit. Grazing moor. Pillar in good condition. Spider centre plugged with tar. Flush bracket faces 4° north. Vented through south sight hole. Extensive views to surrounding hills and along valley to SE. Photographed 7/07/2010, GRP.

Lovely position in an area covered with the evidence of past mining. Coldberry gutter to the north is worth visiting, landscape and geology stunning for those with an interest, the sharp eyed can spot some small galena veins within the outcropping sandstone.

Trig. Trig point,in the mid ground cronkley scar, in the background great dunn fell, little dunn fell and cross fell.

Surprisingly good views from here, which are much better than those at the higher James' Hill, nearby. Coldberry Gutter is bunny heaven, and the reservoir, close by, is a haven for frogs.
