From car park to east of the beacon first walked to the topograph to south to admire the view and take bearings. Around to Beacon from there, north then west, downhill for about two hundred meters then up again and south west. Constructed of stone rather than the usual concrete, a few stones seem to be missing from around the base and one corner on top hence condition logged as slightly damaged. Good views to south and east although a bit misty so distant views were lost. Spider and cap in place. From here continued south and downhill as part of a two hour circular walk. Could have done with a couple of additional footpath sign posts to help. After descending from the pillar the footpath is to the east of the access land. A bit confusing as started to cross the access land but couldn’t find a way through. There were also lots of horses in that field who seemed to think my bag had their food in it. They lost interest when I hid my bag under my jersey. Mist cleared up a bit later on and the Severn Estuary came into view on the way back up the hill to the east of the pillar.

The stone built pillar stands on top of a round barrow inside a hillfort on a spur of the Cotswolds to the northwest of Stroud. The concrete base of the trig is exposed by up to six inches. A stone is missing from the southwest corner of the top of the pillar. It has a metal cap with deep lettering and has FB S5150 and a direction plaque for the Cotswold Way National Trail on its side. The site has a brilliant view to the south and west over the Vale of Berkeley and the River Severn to the Forest of Dean and the distant Welsh Mountains. The wooded slopes of the Cotswold edge meandered away into the distance to the south. A pretty combe lies to the east. Standing on top of the pillar I could see over the nearby trees over Gloucester to the cloud covered Malvern Hills in the north. The trig was visited as part of a circular walk from the NT car park, mostly on the Cotswold Way it also included the nearby topograph and Cliff, Halliday’s and Standish Woods. Surviving cut bench marks were encountered on the side of a building at Ringhill Farm and on a stone next to the path through Cliff Wood. Haresfield Beacon has been designated a SSSI for its geology.
