Slightly damaged 7th May 2023  11:13  by Moacky

I don’t know why, but my eye has always been drawn to this small hill as I drive south on the M74, usually from much larger hills. Today I decided to ‘conquer’ it. I was not disappointed. Parked just east of M74 underpass and a straightforward walk to the summit, with extensive views, which include the motorway.

Parked on minor road in dirt pull-in due S, ~100m from Mway tunnel. Pillar has a commanding, panoramic view... especially of the motoway! Minor damage to top screed leaving one spider arm end exposed; original centre cap retained, deeply indented lettering; rear sight hole unplugged, front and RHD side plugs beginning to degrade.

Parked in a great spot at NS 92036 26043. Walked up road and through gate at NS 92240 26245. Up field to corner and across fence (signs it was electrified at one point but not today) then straight up (felt like Everest after 6 days full on bagging) back via same route. Now when I pass it on the motorway I can say ‘been up there’ rather than ‘there’s a trig up there’

Forside Hill on the OS. Adequate pull-in on minor road to the S near the motorway underpass. Over a couple of fields then on to the open pasture top. It's a steady climb but good going. Murky morning on surrounding tops but clear on this one with fine open views, though the motorway and its noise is a constant presence. I whipped off my togs and had a dance around the pillar! All fixtures in place. Some damage around the spider but nothing bad at present.

Walked quickly up Forside Hill from the parking space to the south, briefly chased by five frolicsome heifers to reach the pillar where my t-shirt was absolutely no protection from the chilling breeze. It had seemed summery at the roadside. All good (cold) exercise, and a fine place to be after driving a longish distance. Pillar remains well, with its cap in place & indented lettering, and one sight-hole open.

Cap present with sunken lettering. Good views all round despite the low position (relative to its neighbours). Nice to see Dungavel Hill East in profile (that I'd just previously climbed). Nice big cut pivot in front of the flush bracket on the ground (see coinea's photo).

First visit. To record FB number. Pillar completed 1st June 1950 costing £19.19s.2d. In 1950 this marker was computed for triangulation as tertiary station NS83/T23 in the Lanark secondary block. Flush bracket S6140 was levelled for height also in 1950. This trig point was last maintained by the OS in June 1978. This hill is called Forside Hill, Harten Hill is 1km to the east. There was a large fawn coloured animal running loose up here, too far away to identify, but too big to be a labrador - not a deer either. I was wary. OS Spider plug with stamped lettering still in situ.
