We had better luck with a visit that others, and a young man explained that the roof to magazines in the fort (under the trig point) was leaking and a number of years ago all the earth was removed, replaced and grassed over. I assume that the trig point had to be moved and placed, more or less, in its original position. However, it is therefore no longer valid as an original trig point. Note that it is shown in position in the 50,000 series maps but not there in the 25,000 maps. See for example the on-line Bing maps. Select OS maps and as the scale changes from 50,000 to 25,000 the trig point vanishes!

Gates open, walked in and up onto earthworks where pillar is locatedPillar painted white, inc FB and is leaning, seems to be sinking into the ground. Member of staff challenged us and stated place is not open to public, but we had photos and GR etc so left then. Cap missing, asphalt plug; 2 sight holes open, other 2 undetermined - below ground level. Good views N.

I parked on the road to the east (although it would have been possible to use the road all the way and park in the Activity Centres' Car Park). The pillar is just within the grounds from the car park and easily reached. I did this without any problem. Pillar is in good condition although the original metal plug has been replaced by an asphalt type one. Not the best location for views.

Leaning, slightly sunken? Revisited during the Unofficial Register gathering: a group of us walked in thru the main gate, which was open, Sat p.m. No-one in the office so we headed up the steps and crossed the grass to the trig. A young chap shouted up - Can I help you? We explained what we were doing: he was quite happy.

Thought this one was a no go area to start with, due to high locked gates. Thought I'd have a climb up the bank next to the gates and have a look - the pillar is located on the far side on top of the Fort - bit tresspassy, but hopped down into fort and over to pillar as no one around - Pillar in good condition - nice place pity it's locked away.
