Walked from Windmill Hill. Approached from north past the observatory domes on the right then right onto the tarmac road and left over a gate where the were several Keep Out signs and one which said That Means You. Giving the telescope building a wide berth, the pillar is in a clearing just to its south. No views as it’s in the middle of woodland. Good find.

Its now got a mirror device mounted which i persume was/is used to reflect signals of. It is aligned with a similar device on a building near to Solar Pillar. UPDATE: As Herstmonceux is the fundamental point of the OSGB36 datum, this pillar is still observered to on occasion to fix the position of the nearby Satalite Observertory, which on occasion does observe GPS orbits and therefore can confirm the UK position within a world Datum, although this isnt done by the OS. (the Active and Passive Stations are used by the OS for that purpose)

This trig is behind the now defunct Isaac Newton Observatory up in the woods. The public footpath doesn't go past it but there are no fences to prevent a visit. Any trespass signs have faded away although a sign on the observatory warns that it ia a dangerous building. The Royal Observatory moved to Herstmonceux from Greenwich just after the war and then on to the Canary Islands in the 1990s - which is where the Isaac Newton telescope now is. This must explain the presence of these three trigs here. They all have late numbers which suggests being built later than the thirties. Transit Meridian has a GPS plaque and also a strange quite large mirror device bolted to the top which is directed towards Solar (the trees have been cut down to provide a clear sight path).
