3rd visit, came to take a GPS reading (which was spot on) but thought as I arrived I was witnessing the destruction of the pillar! The lovely 'grassy knoll' the pillar sits on is being converted into a car park, and the digger was actively scraping the turf away from around the pillar and spreading and flattening out gravel. I watched in absolute horror for about 5 minutes, then the digger driver stopped and we had a lengthy chat about what was going on. He assured me there is no intention to destroy, remove, or even move the pillar, and he was being diligently careful not to damage it. He'd done his reseach on OS pillars - by reading this site!! (How many fallen pillars could have been spared if other landowners or contractors were similarly conscientious?) I cannot imagine however that being positioned in the middle of a car park is going to do the pillar any favours? One to keep an eye on I fear. ~~ 25/08/20 2nd visit, this time on a rainier, cloudier day when the views weren’t quite as extensive. Still gets good marks for it's location and condition.

Quick bag before heading further into the county. Great views south towards Allendale and over the Tyne Valley. Pillar in good condition, fading coat of whitewash just missing Centre plug.

Completed a circular walk, starting out from Hexham Racecourse and included Dipton Burn. Trig easily located, being just inside the entrance gates, great views in all directions helped by being a clear day. As leaving, believe may have passed JRoche18 on his way to log the trig.

Our first visit to Hexham Racecourse. I was so familiar with the place, after studying Google Earth and an interesting video on YouTube, that I drove straight in and parked up close to the pillar. No member of staff to be seen up here today but quite a bit of activity on the camp site. A spectacular setting with great views all round. I noted that the pillar is at an almost identical altitude to the highest two pillars on The Isle of Wight.

Drove to racecourse car park and walked up to the trig which is easily seen from the entrance. All quiet today.

Off to Newcastle so diverted slightly and drove into the racecourse through the jockey's and official's entrance, turned left to the parking area and the pillar sits conveniently in the South-east corner. Nice views over Hexham and the racecourse, but the pillar has been crudely painted with some sort of whitewash, including the Flush Bracket.

The nearby sign says that Hexham is the most scenic racecourse in England (my vote would go to Cartmel). The same can not be said of the pillar but it is bright white and has pride of place outside the racecourse HQ

TP can be spotted immediately you go through the main gate. Views south through to west blocked by the racecourse buildings but the TP is in a good spot and looks well maintained.

Last trig of the day for me before lodging with friends in Hexham for the evening. I saw a car drive out so I guessed the car park was still accessible and risked driving all the way up. I think the venue was being hired for a wake so there were quite a few people around dressed in black. The smartly painted trig is very accessible.

Vgc pillar standing on a small mound near the car park of Hexham Racecourse. Easy access. FB faces west-ish with south-ish sighthole open only. Cap present with sunken lettering. Great views especially over Hexham.

Easily accessible and highly visible. Just within the grounds og the racecourse on well maintained grass mound. Pillar in good condition with original indented lettering plug. Views limited by nearby buildings but over looking Hexham to the north.

SITE VISIT: Key feature on the open front lawn of the racecourse buildings. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains OS centre cap with deep indented letters. Flush bracket faces west, ~281°. Vented through south sight hole.

I couldn’t resist the cluster of Trigs in the Hexham area visited whilst on a day out along Hadrian’s Wall, this pillar sits nicely above the racecourse with good views over Hexham and beyond

Carpentry continuing on the low building to the South. A surprisingly good view for a Racecourse. The whitewash is wearing off, only the SSW sight open.

Was raining quite hard hen we got to this one, located just inside the racing track, clearly visible by the carpark. Didn't think anyone would mind us saying hello to the pillar (it wasn't racing day) My feet got very wet!
