(1379) A private ambulance had broken down on Red Hill Lane. Assistance was coming, but lent a hand to help move it to the verge, and out of harms way. It wasn't much further after that to the start of the PRoW/field entance. Handy bit of a pull-in directly across from this. CBM present on the RHS stone gate post. Wide field margin which runs parallel to the golf club takes you to the pillar. About a five minute walk. Pillar all good, with original plug - one tie-down loop is broken though. An easy one to bag.

Parked in the generous layby at the corner of the road near Bilham House Farm. Followed the track round the edge of the wood until the impassable field boundary was reached. Cut through the wood directly into the trig field. Then it was just a matter of finding a tractor path through the barley to the pillar. Interesting ruins in the wood.

Parked in the charming village of Hooton Pagnell and then walked along Bilham Ln to the PROW at SE48550633. Took this PROW across recently ploughed fields to Red Hill Ln. Climbed metal gate a couple of metres SE of the PROW and then continued NW along boundary of golf course. Walked through the gap in the tree-line as it turns W to pick up an obvious track running NW along the boundary to the 6th tee. Keep ahead where this track turns sharp left down the hill infront of a wooded area and the pillar is then a few metres over to your right just inside the field. Despite the early morning start I encountered a groundsman at the 6th tee but he was too busy with his mobile phone conversation to challenge me !! Trig is in good condition with original metal cap and indented lettering. Someone has tried 'engraving' their mark on the centre of the cap. Unremarkable views from N>E>S across gently undulating farmland. Views from S>W>N restricted by trees. Returned to Red Hill Ln via perimeter of field. This would probably be the better approach when golfers are about and you can't miss the pillar from this side !!

Parked in Hickleton outside the village hall on the triangle. Approached via Red Hill Lane. Where the public footpath for Bilham House Farm leaves the road we climbed a red gate giving access to the golf course (14th tee). It is then possible to either follow the field edge or the edge of the golf course towards the trig. We went for the golf course, stay close to the edge cross the 7th tee and follow the 6th from green to tee. Trig pillar is at the edge of the wood behind the 6th tee. Encountered some hardy golfers but no one challenged us. Trig in vgc, os marked plug intact, one clip broken. Had been scared of this one for over three years, but in reality access was fine. My 100th pillar!!

Walked up the edge of the golf course saw the first bluebells in the wood below the pillar. The folly above the pillar is Bilham Belvedere. The ruins of a Summer House or Belvedere, built around 1800 by John Rawstorn for William Hewett of Bilham Hall, (the Hall was demolished in the 19thC). The Belvedere was said to have "the richest prospect of any place in the West Riding of Yorkshire." Copied from an entry in geograph.org.uk.

Visible in hedge with reasonable access although not near a public path. I just followed the bottom of the fields from Red Hill Lane without venturing onto the golf course - fields had recently been harvested and ploughed so there was no real problem. Pillar is in reasonably good condition. Did not seem to be the highest point around.
